The Greek National Public Health Organisation, unfortunately, confirms 460 new cases of COVID -19, on Thursday, including 5 more deaths and many critically sick.
Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis' administration appealed largely, without success, to people to wear masks, even in public, as required, and to keep social distances of at least 1.5 metres (6 feet) apart, But even fines of 150 euros for individuals who violated the measures and up to 10.000 euros for businesses, along with the prospect of being temporarily closed, hasn't worked enough to reduce the cases.
Tourists who were allowed to enter Greece last July, brought the infection with them, even though they had to produce tests showing that they were negative, indicating that they were either asymptomatic or caught COVID -19 in Greece.
Most of the new cases are in Attica, that includes Athens. Another problem for the government are crowds of young party-goers, after midnight, at public squares, drinking and carrying on, while the police only urged them but do not force them to leave.
The government said it will not have to impact stricter measures while epidemiologists are alarmed that the pandemic is getting out of control.
Deputy Civil Protection Minister, Nikos Hardalias, said: "The issue is not to talk about new measures, but for those that have already been announced to be implemented," he said, "Things can get better but they can also become worse and that depends only on us," he added.
And a request to my compatriots: "Let us all try to keep ourselves, our beloved families and all Greeks healthy, it's up to us and we deserve it."
