STRONG EARTHQUAKE HITS THE ISLAND OF SAMOS

A strong earthquake measuring 6.7  degrees of the Richter scale struck near the island of Samos.  The tremor was recorded around noon on Friday, 30th October 2020 at 1.5 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10 km below the surface.

Unfortunately, two 17-year-old children a boy and a girl were killed by this disaster.  It is an enormous tragedy, especially, for their families to whom we express our heartfelt and sincere condolences. A grievous lament that the residents of Samos expressed by saying that they wished that all their houses were destroyed and the children lived.   We pray and hope that no more lives are lost.

Eleven other people were injured who have been hospitalised, one woman being in a very precarious condition, also an 11-year-old boy is seriously wounded. Our very best wishes for an absolute and speedy recovery.

The earthquake caused catastrophic impacts on many buildings, including a church, and the entire infrastructure of Samos.

In Izmir, Turkey at least 20 buildings collapsed,  For the time being, there are no precise numbers of injuries and fatalities but it is feared that this picture will change for the worse when rescuers find time to search, and the earth hasn't stopped shaking, due to the severe aftershocks.

A tsunami was triggered as well, that hit both Turkey and Greece.   In Turkey it was much worse, damages are enormous, even boats were pulled out to sea from their moorings.

Our profound sympathy to our neighbours, the Turks, for their numerous tragic fatalities and the destruction of their homes and our deepest admiration for the resilience of both the Turkish and Greek people.

The Greek prime minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis sent his deep sympathy to president Erdogan for the many tragic fatalities and his concern for the vast destruction of the buildings in Izmir and elsewhere.
