In 1761, Phillis Wheatly a young West-African girl was caught and brought to America on a slave ship.

There Susanna Wheatly, wife of prominent  Boston businessman, John Wheatly bought her at an auction to serve as a lady's maid. 

The girl would rise from her humble beginings to become the first African-American girl. One with a penchant for Ancient Greece.

 The Kritios Boy a statue discoverd in the Acropolis Museum is not only one of the most important sculptures of ancient Greece and has a "Severe Style". 

The statue's torso was found in 1865 south-east of the Parthenon while the head was found in 1888.

GREECE HAILS INCLUSION OF ODESSA UKRAINE ON WORLD HERITAGE LIST

 


Greece's Foreign Affaires Ministry welcomed the World Heritage Committee's decision to include the Historical of the city of Odessa. Ukraine in the World's Heritage List it said on a statement on Thursday.  

ARCHAEOLOGISTS DISCOVER 4.300-YEAR-OLD TOMBS AND A GOLD-LEAF MUMMY

 

Archaeologists have announced the discovery of four 4.300-year-old and a mummy wrapped in gold.

The mummy is a man named Hakeshepes and preserved in a sarcophagus. It is one of the oldest and most complete non-royal corpses that have been discovered in Egypt.

It was discovered in the area of Saqqara. which is located 19 miles south of Cairo.

Archaeologists in Egypt announced they had discovered a 1.80-year-old complete residential city from the Roman era at the heart of the southern city of Luxor

Which is exactly the opposite of what is really happening because Erdogan daily aggresively threatens Greece. We are very unfortumate to have such aggresive neighbors.

GREECE HAS HIGH EXPECTATIONS FROM GAS DEPOSITS OFF CRETE


 The government in Greece said it had "high expectations" of extruding gas off Crete.

Greece began gas exploration starting with seismic survay in November 2022.

PARTHENON MARBLES RETURN TO GREECE DIFFICULT BUT NOT IMPOSSIBLE



Acheiving an agreement for the permanent return of the Parthenon Marbles by the British Museum to Greece is difficult but not impossible said Minister of Culture and Sports Lina Mendoni in Parliament today.  

Greece does not recognise any claims of ownership by the British Museum because they are recognised as a protuct of theft the Minister said. She added that the government has been working from the start systematically with responsibility to acheive the national goal the return and unification of the Parthenon  Marbles to Athens and the Acropolis Museum.   
 



STUFFED PEPER RECIPE


 4 large peppers

500 g (1lb) minced meat

Olive oil

2 tbsp chopped onions

2 cloves garlic minced

1 cup boiled rice, strained

Salt and pepper to taste 

1 cup tomato sauce

2 tbsp Parmesan


Heat oven to 180 C (350 F) and cook meat, onion, garlic and tomato sauce over medium heat until the meat is brown, add the rice and stuff the peppers, sprinkle with Parmesan and bake for 20 minutes until the meat is cooked and serve with baked potatoes and a salad of your choice.  



  

ROYAL TOMB FOUND IN LUXOR EGYPT

 

A royal tomb dating back to 3.500 years was disovered by archaeologists in the area of Luxor Egypt Ashput was the female Pharaoh and it is possible that she co-ruled ancient Egypt around the time the ancent tomb was built.

A group of arcaeologists from the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities and an accesion from the new Kingdom and Asheput was the female pharaoh that co-ruled ancient Egypt the time the tomb was built. 

They were connected with the McDonald Institute for Archaeology of the University of Cambridge who were respomsible of uncovering the tomb. 


16-METER-LONG BOOK OF THE DEAD FOUND IN AN EGYPTIAN SARCOPHAGUS

 A 16-meter-long papyrus found in an Egyprtian sarcophagus by a team of archaelologists.  It is the first complete papyrus text to be found for over a century.

The descovery was made in Seqqara the necropolis that served the ancient city of Memphis.

MARKET ECONOMY THRIVES IN ANCIENT GREECE 3.000 YEARS AGO








By analyzing sediment cores taken from six sites in southern Greece, an international team of researchers claimed recently that the market economy thrieved in Ancient Greece, 3.000 years earlier that what believed. 

The researchers identified kinds of cereal, olive oil and grapevine production indicating major changes in agricultural production between 1.000 BC and 600 AD.

These changes show that Ancient Greece had a market economy that responded to the law of demand and supply thousands of years before the modern Industrial Revolution. 

PLANE LANDS SAFELY AT ATHENS AIRPORT AFTER APPARENTLY FAKE BOMB THREAT


 Greek F-16 figjhter jets were mobilized to intercept a plane perpurtrated to be carrying a fake bomb.The plane in question was a Boeing 737 belonging to Ruyan Air which headed from Poland to Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos located just 20 kilometers from the Greek capital.

The plane made a safe landing from the aircraft. A specialist explosives unit from the police searched the p;ane but did not find any explosive device. 

MUSEUM TO HOAST PART OF 300.000 ANCIENT ANTIQUITIES OF THESSALONIKI

 The museum that will hoast part of the ancient antiquities of the Tessaloniki metro will be created at the Fountain metro stadium the Greek Ministry of Culture annouced at the weekend.

Thessaloniki's Fountain Square is one of the most famous meeting points of the city.

THE PYRAMID-LIKE PEAK OF MOUNT TAYGETUS IN GREECE

 The pyramid-like peak of mount Taygetos in the southern Peloponnese has been captured in all its glory by a drone video. 

The name of the mountain is one of the oldest recorded in Europe appearing in the Odyssey.  In classical mythology it was associated to the nymph Tayete from whom it was named after.

The Taygetus massive is about 100 km long extending from the center of the Peloponnese to cape Matapan in its southermost extremity.

RARE PHOTO TAKEN ON 1895 ATHENS ROOF TERRACE BROUGHT TO LIGHT

This etraodinary photo of a group of people relaxing around a table on the roof terrace of the German Arhaelogical Institute DAI brought to light the building brought to light was recently released by the Institute. The DAI says the photo was mosr probably taken in 1895 and the scaffolding around Saint Nicholas Church in Neapoli on left is surely an indication of its date. Unfortunately the names of the gentlemen in the photo were not reported.

PHILIP LUDWELL AMERICA''S FIRST CONVERT TO ORTHODOXY





 




On December 29th 1705 a remarkable man was born in Tidewater Virginia fated to be America's first Orthodox convert.

Nothing is known about Ludwell III except that he lost his parents at an early age and was converted by his relatives to Orthodoxy. 


KARAMANLIS THE LEADER WHO DOMINATED POST-WAR GREECE





 When King Paul entrusted Karamanlis to form a goverment on October 5th 1955 following the death of PrimeMinister Alexandros Papagos, one of Greece's modern leader that made his appearance on the National stage. He was destined to shape the future of Greece.

Karamanlis, who passed away on April 23rd 1998 at the age of 91 was the man chosen to pull Greece out of the seven dark years of dictatorship in 1974.

John Delong, a researcher at the University of Nebraska was interested in defining bacteial activity consumed viruses and if such could sustain both individual and commynity population growth.

DID ODYSSEYS TRAVEL TO IRELAND?






Homer's Odyssey recounts the tale of Odyssey returning from the Trojan war. For a varierty of reasons the trip was not an easy one it took a full ren years for him to return home.

But the journey from Troy to Ithaka Odyseus' home town took a full ten years to arrive home. For this reason he did not travel in the Mediterranean but Ireland.

BREAKFAST EGGS WITH MAYONNAISE


 1 tbsp white vinegar

4 eggs

2 English muffins

Butter at room temperature

Baby rocket leaves to serve

1 avocado, sliced to serve

1 tbsp fried shalots

For the mayonnase:

1 extra large egg

250 ml olive oil

1 tbsp lemon juice

1 tsp Dijon mustard

Season to taste

Crack each egg into a cup without the white. pour over the olive oil, lemon juice and season to taste 

Using a hand blender place over the yolks and season to taste until thick mayonnaise is formed.

PRESIDENT OF THE GREEK REPUBLIC RAISES WAR REPARATIONS IN GERMANY VISIT

 

The president of the Greek Republic. Katerina Sakellaropoulou raised the issue of war reparations during her visit to Germany on Thursday. 

At  the meeting her German counterpart Frank-Walter Steinmayer stressed "the outmost importance of the issue  of war reparations and occupations loans." 

She added that the dialogue on the issue will benefit both countries on the reparation of past disputes and will strengthen the bilateral cooperation in future.

TYCHE THE ANCIENT GREEK GODDESS OF FORTUNE


 Ancient Greek goddess Tyche which represented good fortune or luck was not one of the twelve Olympians yet her powers exceeded theirs.

Ancient Greeks believed in supernatural for almost all events and attributed them to goddess Tyche. The Romans believed in her also renaming her Fortuna. The English word for fortune derives from Fortuna. Some even call her Lady Luck. 

THE MOUNT ATHOS ACADEMY THAT PRESERVED GREEK IDENITY UNDER OTTOMAN RULE


 


The historic Athonite Academy at Mount Athos, the Holy Mountain of Orthodoxy was  constructed for promoting Christianity and Greek identity, during the dark ages of Ottoman rule. 

The educational institution was built in 1749 as a dependency of the Vatopedi Monastery to offer high-level education, ancient philosophy and modern physical science were taught.

THOUSANDS PAY LAST RESPECTS TO FORMER KING CONSTANTINE OF GREECE


 


Thousands of mourners paid their last respects to former King Constantine of Greece at the Orthdox Metrpolitan Cathedral on Monday.

A long queue was created in the early hours outside Saint Eleftherios  next to the Cathedral drapped with the Greek flag until the former King Constantine was laid at rest next to his ancestors' tombs at Tatoi.

60.000 COVID DEATHS A MONTH REPORTED IN CHINA


 China's COVID-19 death toll is rising as county reached up 60.000 related fatalites in only a sincgle month.

The WHO is now demanding the Cinese goverment be more forthcoming with figures releasing oficial data.   

The removal of the governments zero-Covid policy came after mass protests in December 2022 let to reconsideration of its position.

Certain key parts of the policy such as holding people in quarantine camps only discontinued at the end of December but rapidly increased plaguing the country.

 Spyros Louis was a Greek water carrier who won the first modern 1891 Olympic Games in Athens.  Following his victory he was celebrated as a national hero. 

How did a young man born in a poor family manage to catch the prettiest girl in Marousi? By winning the Summer Olympics he had the opportunity to impress his love.

RICE ALEXANDER THE GREAT'S GIFT TO THE WESTERN WORLD


 Rice is one of the most important foods produced worldwide. with everone aware of its value across the globe. Many years past before its nutritional valew was recognized. It is the single most cultivated cerial in the world.

Gatronomically speaking it represents the base of many international cuisines especially India.

When Alexander the Great conquered the then-known world and India one his gifts to the western world rice. 

GREECE BECOMES ROYAL HUB FOR FORMER KING CONSTANTINE'S FUNERAL







 Greece is preparing to host several European royals who will be coming to Athens for former King Constantine's funeral on Monday.  The government has decided to upgrade the representation. 

Among tbe royals who will attend the funeral are:

Filipe of Spain

Juan Carlos, former King of Spain

Henri, grand Duke of Luxembourgh

Haaken, crown Prince of Norway

Carl XV1, crown Prince of Sweden

Willem Alexander of the Netherlands 

Queen Margerite of Denmark

The UK will be represented by Prince Edward the younger brother of King Charles. 


However, Greek offiials have not ruled out that Prince Willem was one of former Greek King's  godfathers.  The funeral service will take place  at the Athens Metropolis and then he will buried at his ancestral graves at the royal palace in Tatoi. 

Details for the funeral and burial will be left to Constantino's family and his body will remain at the  Metropolis so that anyone who wishes to offer their respects can do so.    

EU PLANS TO ADOPT TENTH PACKAGE OF SANCTIONS AGAINST RUSSIA

 Brussels has accelerated activities in the direction, seeking to adopt a new package before the February Ukraine summit in Kyiv reported Polish agency PAP.  The previous one, the ninth, was adopted in December.  Some of the countries favouring thougher sancions against Russia were not completely satisfied with the decisions taken but by the end of the year the EU deided to demonstrate unity. 

Therefore the disatisfied decided to make demands to reach a consesus Ursula von der Leyer, the leader of the European Commission said that work of the tenth package is gaining momentum. 

HOW BAD IS CHINA'S COVID OUTBRAKE?

 In the absence of credible information from the Chinese government, researchers around the world are looking for clues in able to determine the severity of this pandemic.  

As Covid barrels through China, scientists throughout the world are searching for clues to prevent Covid from sprawling into very serious dimentions.   The World Health Organisation is deeply concerned about the spreading of this disease dispite the fact that most of the cases have been vaxinated thrice.

Defeated regimes are not only swiftly removed from power, but also removed from our memories.

When Adolph Hitler's hated regime crashed down in 1945 with the allied victory after the 2nd World War reminders of the 12 years existance linguered in people's minds like a nightmare the Holocaust and the murder of thousands of Jews in the concentration camps. 

Germans today although they do not blame about their compatriots horrific deeds feel terrible remorse.
