SEVERE SANCTIONS AGAINST RUSSIA

It is well known that Russian forces have launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine by land, sea, and air.  This is the largest attack of one state against another since World War II.  In a press conference, Mrs. Ursula von der Leyen and Mr. Josep Borrell showed their deep concern about the issue.  They both said that Russia must be severely sanctioned.

European Union leaders agreed to impose severe economic sanctions on Russia, joining the USA and Britain in trying to punish Vladimir Putin and his allies on unleashing a full-scale attack on Ukraine.  The EU will freeze Russian assets and will block Russia’s banks to European financial markets as part of what EU foreign policy leader, Josep Borrell, described as the harshest package of sanctions ever implemented.    Athens is furious with Moscow due to the murder of 10 Greek nationals.

A GLIMSP OF HOPE

Fortunately, the Ukrainian and Russian representatives will hold talks on the border of Ukraine and Belarus, we hope this will be the end of this terrible European war the worst since World War II.

LATEST NEWS ON THE UKRAINE RUSSIAN CONFLICT

Russian forces moved by air and land to attack the capital of Ukraine, Kyiv, hitting defenses across Ukraine, that western defense officials said were unexpectedly strong, while Moscow signaled openness to hold talks with Ukraine.  In Greek, we have a saying “Fovu tous Danaous ke thora ferondes” (Beware of those bringing gifts!).  Despite the overture, Putin excoriated Ukrainian president Zelensky and his government as terrorists while the truth is the exact opposite Boris Johnson the British PM called Putin an anarchist and the US said he had Nazi tendencies.

Most European Union citizens are leaving Ukraine, especially families with young children.  So, most of the Greek community in Ukraine is ready to leave.

The Greek Prime Minister asks for the Elgin marbles to be returned to Greece

According to Greek PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis Greece is ready to accept refugees from Ukraine.  Greece will stand by the Greek community in Ukraine and especially the community of Mariupol.  “If there are Greeks who wish to leave Ukraine, we shall warmly welcome them,” he told the Greek President of the Republic, Katerina Sakerallopoulou, in a meeting at the Presidential Mansion.

Latest tragic news, many dead reported in the village of Sardana, including two Greeks where six Greeks were also injured, including a child and four Greeks dead in the village of Bourkas.  Our deepest condolences to the families of the dead and our sincere wish to the injured for a speedy and complete recovery.     Unfortunately, another four Greeks are reported dead according to latest information. There can be nothing worse than war.

60 PLUS CITIZENS FACE MONTHLY FINES FOR NOT GETTING COVID 19 SHOT IN GREECE

Greece intends to fine all people aged 60 and over who aren’t vaccinated against Covid – 19, as a way to boost lagging uninoculated levels and reduce pressure on health care,

Prime minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis told senior citizens the simplest way to avoid the disease is to get vaccinated.  “To the few of our fellow citizens over 60 who are still unvaccinated I encourage them today to take the step.” he said “It is not a matter of fine, yes the fine will be imposed but that is the least.  Protect  your life and the lives of your loved ones and understand the vaccine is safe.”

Greek authorities say the non-vaccinated remain at high risk for hospitalization and add pressure on Greek health care.  Please don’t be deniers.

WAR IN EUROPE

                                                         WAR IN EUROPE

Ukraine declares a nationwide state of emergency and Russia evacuates diplomatic staff.

Russia’s state-run news agency Tass reported that Russia is starting to evacuate personnel from its diplomatic facilities in the Ukrainian embassy in the capital Kyiv and consulates in Khaki,  Odesa, and Lyiv.  The TASS report stated the embassy in  Kyiv confirmed the evacuations have begun.

The Ukrainian Parliament voted to approve the first reading or draft which gives permission to Ukrainians to carry firearms and act in self-defense, Reuters reported.

"The adoption of this law is fully in the interest of state and society,” the authors of the law said in a note and added that the law was needed due to the “existing threats and danger for the citizens of Ukraine.   Satellite images show a new deployment of more than 100 military vehicles and dozens of troop tents in southern Belarus, near the Ukraine border.  The images released by Maxar Technologies were also shared and a new field hospital has been added to a military garrison close to the border with Ukraine.

Earlier in the day, the Russian president, Vladimir Putin said that his country was always open to diplomacy.  However it puts its own national security interest first and would continue strengthening its military in the wake of a “difficult international situation,” Putin added.

“Our country is always open to direct and honest dialogue and ready to search for diplomatic solutions to the most complicated issues”, Reuters quoted Putin as saying.  “But I want to repeat  that Russia’s interests and the security of our people are unconditional.”

According to Boris Johnson, Russia plans the biggest war in Europe since 1945.  He told BBC’s Sophie Raworth,  in an interview.  “All signs are that the plan has already begun. Intelligence suggests Russia intends to launch an invasion that will encircle the Ukrainian capital Kyiv”, Johnson said  “People have to know the cost in human lives that could entail,” he added.

The prime minister was speaking from Munich, where world leaders were meeting for the annual security conference.  The latest estimates by the US  government suggest that between 169.000 and 190.000 Russian troops are stationed along the Ukraine border’s Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine.  Blasts have also been heard from the southern port of Odesa.

Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr  Zelensky said that Russia has carried out missile strikes on Ukraine’s infrastructure, air defense, and air force with ”high precision weapons”.   Tanks and troops have poured into Ukraine’s eastern, southern and northern borders Ukrainian authorities said.

Russian military convoys have crossed from Belarus into Ukraine’s northern borders.

THE NEW TZAR INVADES UKRAINE

Unfortunately, Putin the undemocratic leader of Russia instructs troops to invade Ukraine.

The world is aghast with the decision of the new tzar, I hope serious sanctions will be imposed on Russia.  How very tragic for all Ukrainian families who are apparently rushing to leave Kyiv to be saved I wish to tell them we are definitely on their side.  Boris Johnson, the British PM called Putin a dictator, and the USA  say he definitely has Nazi inclinations,

UKRAINIAN AND RUSSIAN DISHES

Traditional Ukrainian dishes are derived from ancient peasant meals which made use of grain resources such as rye as well as vegetables like potatoes, cabbages, mushrooms, and beetroot.  These dishes incorporate both Slavic and European influences as a result of years of foreign occupation and jurisdiction.

                                                             BORSCHT

1 tbsp of vegetable oil or butter

500 g  (1 lb) beetroot, diced

1 large carrot, scraped and diced

1 celery stalk, threaded and finely sliced

1 large waxy potato, peeled and diced

1 onion, peeled and finely chopped

1 ½ litre beef stock

2 garlic cloves, peeled and minced

½ a cabbage, trimmed and finely shredded

2 tomatoes, halved, deseeded, grated, skins discarded

Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

To serve:

300 g (10 oz) sirloin steak

Sour cream

1 tbsp chopped dill

Sauté the beetroot, carrot, celery, onion, and garlic in oil or butter for 2  minutes until the vegetables are covered with fat.  Add the stock and season to taste.  Bring the soup to a boil then cover and simmer gently for 15 minutes, add the tomatoes and cabbage.  Cover the saucepan and simmer for another 20 minutes, taste for seasoning, and adjust accordingly.

Trim the fat off the steak and cook on a hot griddle for 2 minutes on each side.  Remove the steak and let it rest for 5 minutes, then slice it as thinly as possible and add the meat juices to the soup.

To serve divide the strips of steak between the soup bowls and ladle the soup on top.  Add a dollop of sour cream and chopped dill and serve.

                                                          BANOCH

Traditionally prepared over an open fire, this velvety Ukrainian porridge originated in the Carpathian highlands.  It consists of flour, a mixture of sour cream, and Bindra cheese

500 ml (2 cups) of cream or sour cream

200 g cornmeal

Pinch of salt

Brydra and  pork fat ad gustum

(This is for 2 people)

Bring the cream to a boil, gradually add the cornmeal, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon. Add a pinch of salt and simmer gently until the cornmeal becomes almost soft.  When the cornmeal is almost cooked, dice some pork fat and brydra.  Banoch may be served with mushrooms, fried onions and a local sheep’s milk similar to both cheese and butter.

Do prepare this delightful Ukrainian Easter bread and naturally banosh and borsht

2 packets of dry yeast

2 cups warm milk

7-8 cups plain flour, divided

1  ¼ cup sugar

½ cup butter, melted and cooled to room temperature

5 egg yolks, slightly beaten

1 tsp salt

1 vanilla

2 cups of golden raisins

1 egg beaten with

1 tbsp water

In a large bowl stir yeast into warm milk to dissolve and let it sit for 5 minutes.  Add 3 cups of flour and mix with a wooden spoon. Cover the bowl with cling film and a small blanket and placket in a warm place until doubled in bulk.  Soak the raisins in warm water for 30 minutes then drain and pat dry before using, this will keep the raisins soft in the bread,  Transfer the dough to a bowl and add the sugar, melted butter, egg yolks, salt vanilla, and raisins, and stir to combine. Add 4 cups of flour, one at a time, and knead until the dough no longer sticks to your hands.  Cover and allow to rise until doubled in bulk.  Punch it down and let it prove for 30 minutes.

Prepare the loaf pans by brushing them with melted butter   Divide the dough into as many parts as you have pans to be filled and leave some dough the size of an orange for decoration.  To make the ornaments just roll some of the dough into ropes. Form crosses and place on top of the loaves.  Brush with egg wash and set in a warm place until doubled in size and bake in an oven preheated to    (400 F) and bake the bread for 10 minutes then lower the heat to 180 C (350 F) and bake for 30 minutes more until done.  To prevent the tops from over-browning you may loosely drape pieces of aluminum foil over the loaves, once the crust is golden.

Remove the loaves from the oven and allow them to cool in the pans for 5 minutes then remove from the pans to a rack to cool completely.  You may wrap the loaves with paper towels and then place them in plastic bags and store them for a few days in the fridge or ice them for further use.

To thaw, keep covered loaves in the refrigerator for one day, then unwrap and serve at room temperature.

RUSSIAN UCRAINE CONFLICT

                        PRESIDENT BIDEN ADDRESSES UKRAINE CRISIS

The US announces harsh sanctions for what the White House says is Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Russia’s deployment of troops into the two Moscow-backed self-proclaimed republics in eastern Ukraine amounts to the “beginning of an invasion,” the United States said.  Deputy NSA Johnathan Finer told CNN on Tuesday, that Washington’s response would be “swift and severe” with the White House preparing for sanctions.

Earlier, the United Kingdom slapped sanctions on Russian banks and high net worth individuals, while Germany, another of Kyiv’s western allies, halted the approved process for the North Stream and Gas pipeline project.  Moscow has brushed aside the threat of retaliatory measures from the west, with Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov saying Russia was accustomed to sanctions.

The two self-proclaimed republics Donetsk and Luhansk located in eastern Ukraine have been recognized as independent states by Russia.  The European Union is in a position to decide on fuller sanctions against Russia if it invades Ukraine, which cannot be ruled out according to Chancellor Olaf Scholtz.   He said that Russia’s recognition of the two regions was compatible with international law, and endangered the sovereignty of Ukraine

If everyone in Europe starts leafing through history books, where borders used to be “then we have a very unsettling time ahead of us,” Scholtz added.

,MAGNA CARTA

WHAT DID THE MAGNA CARTA MEAN TO THE ENGLISH IN 1215?

1215 will surely be defined by Magna Carta, when on the 15th June of that fateful year, King John reluctantly agreed to seal a great charter in the meadow of Runnymede, beside the river Thames, he put his name on a document that had done more than any other to champion the cause of the rule of law over absolute power.  That fact alone makes 1215 a hugely significant year in English history.

The Great Charter 1215, the nobles and the Church were against the King : Scotland and Wales promised aid and the powerful city of London was hot in the cause of freedom. With 7 horsemen in his train John found himself face to face with a nation in arms.  King and barons met at Runnymede on Thames, between Staines and Window on the 13th of June 1215 and the MAGNA CARTA or the GREAT CHARTER was discussed, passed and signed in one day. This priceless document was not couched as others had been in vague language which could be interpreted almost anyhow, but it definitely provided that the King should not raise money from his subjects without his subjects’ consent and that justice should not be delayed, denied or sold to any man.  There were many other provisions in the Charter but that is the subject of the chief theme and that foundation has built the whole fabric of English liberties.  King John solemnly swore before Laughton and the assembled nobles to observe this Charter, and in token he set his royal seal thereto.

A copy of the MAGNA CARTA, brown and shriveled with age may be seen at the British Museum.

MY BELOVED HUSBAND DIED 7 YEARS AGO

My beloved husband Alexandros Cocali, unfortunately, died seven years ago leaving me desolate. He was a wonderful husband, a loving father of Spyros and Yiannis, a loving father-in-law of Janna and Elpida, proud grandfather of Alex and Tina, Joy, Constantinos, Stephanos, Alex and Christophoros

One of the men aboard a ferry that caught fire near Greece on Friday has been found alive authorities say.  Rescuers spotted the man on Sunday on the vessel’s stern as it was being towed to port.

“Tell me I am alive,” the 21-year-old truck driver from Belarus told rescuers according to media.  The man was one of the 21 truck drivers who were missing, and he told Greek media he had heard other voices on the ship, so he presumed more or all were alive.

Eleven people are still missing, while more than 270 were rescued and taken to Corfu.  As previously mentioned in an older post the Italian-flagged Euroferry Olympia caught fire en route to the port of Brindisi.  The cause of the blaze is still being investigated and the captain and two engineers were briefly detained before being released.

Small fires 0000continued to burn inside the vessel on Sunday after it was towed to a secure area north of Corfu.  The people that are missing are thought to be from Bulgaria, Greece, and Turkey, Greek authorities said earlier.

"The management of the Grimaldi group wishes to express its deep gratitude to all Greek and Italian authorities involved in the rescue operation, in particular, the Greek Coastguard and the Italian Guarda di Finanza for their prompt intervention," the ferry company said in a statement.

We hope and pray that the remaining missing passengers will be found safe and sound.

ELIOPSOMO

Eliopsomo also known as Greek olive bread is the ultimate comfort food.  Enjoy a warm slice with some feta for breakfast.

3 ¼ cups plain flour

1 ½ tsp dry yeast

1 ½ tsp salt

1 ½ cups warm water

A little extra flour

Olive oil for the bowl

Mix the flour, yeast, and salt add the warm water and knead in a mixer for 5 minutes.  The batter will be a bit sticky, add the chopped olives and mix well and knead for 2 minutes so that the olives are mixed evenly in the batter.  Shape the batter into a round loaf. Cover with cling film and a small blanket and allow to rise until doubled in bulk.

Punch the dough down and shape it into a round loaf once again.  Allow to do double in bulk and bake in an oven preheated to 180 C (350 F) for 30 minutes with a lid on, then remove the lid and bake for 15 minutes until golden brown all over.  Allow cooling before slicing.

SHOCKING IMAGES OF EUROFERRY OLYMPIA IN FLAMES

The Euroferry Olympia caught fire early yesterday morning for unknown reasons.  Most of the passengers and crew were saved by lifeboats that took them to Greek and Italian ships that took them to safety in Corfu.   Information about 11 missing people is causing serious concern. We must tell their families and friends to be patient because all that is possible is done to find them by local authorities so we hope they will soon all be together again.

The fire broke out shortly after the departure of the ship from the port of Igoumenitsa in the early hours of Friday off Erekousa.  According to Greek media, some people are injured and were taken to hospitals in Corfu and we wish them a speedy and complete recovery.

It is believed that the fire broke out from a refrigerator truck on the ferry.  “The flames started coming out from the upper decks after we had left the ship,” said a passenger “It was then that we heard explosions.”  According to him the crew was organized and trained.  “If the crew did not react immediately, I do not know what would have happened, maybe we would be overtaken,” he said.

The Greek coast guard said in total 239 passengers and 51 crew members had been on board of the Italian-flagged Euroferry Olympia and most f them had boarded rescue vessels that took them to safety to Corfu where ambulances were waiting.

IS RUSSIA GOING TO INVADE UKRAINE?

Are Russian forces getting ready for war in Ukraine?  At least 130.000 Russian troops are positioned within reach of Ukraine’s borders as Russia demands security guarantees from the West.   While the US says Russian forces are ready to launch military action any day, Moscow has repeatedly said it has no such plans and points for the withdrawal of some units.  What happens next could jeopardize Europe’s entire security structure.

Russia is adamant it has no plans to attack Ukraine, but the threat is taken seriously because Russia invaded Ukraine in 2014 and seized some of its territories. More than 100.000  Russian troops have been deployed close to the Ukrainian borders and reported 30.000 more troops are engaged in exercises in Belarus, close to its 1.084 km borders with Ukraine.  Joe Biden says in total they are more than 150.000.

Russia’s Defence Ministry has said it is sending some of its units back to base after they have completed combat drills, but major exercises are still going on.   The Belarus exercises are scheduled to end on the 20th of February.   NATO sees no sign of de-escalation and that Russia has “massive invasion forces” ready to attack from Crimea to Belarus.  What is not known is what president Putin has decided on this issue.  Many Western governments have called their citizens to leave Ukraine.

Ukraine’s president has appealed to the West not to spread panic and France believes that Putin’s main aim is on gaining a better security deal.  Mr Putin insists that Russia does not want war and is ready to negotiate but he has also threatened “appropriate retaliatory military readiness” were not met.  Russia has resisted Ukraine’s move towards European institutions, both NATO and the EU.  Its core remains now is for the West to guarantee Ukraine will not join NATO a defensive alliance of 30 countries.

Ukraine shares borders with both the EU and Russia, but as a former Soviet Republic it has deep social and cultural ties with Russia and Russian is widely spoken there.  When the Ukrainians deposed their pro-Russian president in early 2014, Russia annexed Ukraine’s southern Crimean peninsular and backed separatists who captured swaths of eastern Ukraine.  The rebels fought the Ukrainian military ever since in a conflict that claimed more than 14.000 lives.

Russia is also frustrated that a 2015 peace deal for eastern Ukraine is far from being fulfilled.  There are still no arrangements for independently monitored elections in the separatist regions.  Russia denies the accusations that is part of the conflict.

TREASURES OFTHE GREEK OF INDEPENDENCE IN ATHENS NATIONAL HISTORY MUSEUM

Aspects and relics from the Greek War of Independence bring to life before the eyes of its visitors the most historic monuments of modern Greece. The National Historical Museum indissolubly linked to the modern course of the country was organized by the Historical and Ethnological Society of Greece, on the 25th of  March 1884, while the first exhibition entitled “Monument of the Social Struggle” was presented at the premises of the National Technological University of Athens.

TENSIONS BETWEEN UKRAINE AND RUSSIA (Continued)

I have to write about this issue once again as it is the first topic internationally

Tensions between Ukraine and Russia are at their highest in years between Ukraine and Russia, with Russian troops accumulating along the two countries’ borders, spurring fears that Moscow could launch an invasion.

Ukraine has been warned that Russia is trying to destabilize the country ahead of any military invasion.  Western powers have repeatedly warned Russia against aggressive moves against Ukraine.  The Kremlin denies it is planning to attack and argues that NATO supports Ukraine including weapon supplies and military training, constitutes a threat on Russia’s western flank.  The picture is complicated but. apparently, there is a breakthrough.

The US and NATO have described the movements and concentration of troops as “unusual”.  As many as 100.000 Russian troops have remained amassed at the Ukrainian border, despite the warning from President Biden and European leaders of serious consequences should Putin move on with an invasion.  Russia’s Defence Minister earlier said that troops in regions of Ukraine were returning to their bases after completing military drills a step that was received with caution in Europe.

NATO’s General Secretary, Jen Stoltenberg said there would have to be substantial withdrawals of troops and equipment to remove the threat of an invasion, echoing an earlier comment from the UK Minister of Foreign Affairs. Liz Truss. But he said there was the reason for “cautious optimism” as Russia appeared willing to engage with diplomatic efforts.

THE LATEST ON UKRAINE RUSSIAN BORDER

US officials are warning Russia could launch an invasion of Ukraine as soon as this week, but are still holding out hope that diplomacy can prevail.  President Biden with Russia’s Putin and Ukraine’s Zelensky over the weekend but there were no major breakthroughs.  Germany’s chancellor is meeting with Zelensky at Kyiv today in ongoing de-escalation efforts.  Meanwhile, multiple countries, including the United States, have urged their citizens to leave and reduce staff at embassies in Ukraine, as Russia continues its build-up near the borders.

The president of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, on Monday expressed support of the EU parliament to Ukraine amid warnings of a Russian invasion.  “The position of this house is clear, we are with Ukraine,” she said.  She demanded that Ukraine’s “defiance must be matched  by continued European resolve and unity.”

“What we are witnessing is a serious threat to peace in Europe,” she added.  Metsola urged for de-escalation of current tension, but said the European Parliament stands “ready to support swift, forceful and concrete action.”  “We do this in coordination with other European institutions and the international community, should the situation deteriorate,” she added.

Multiple threats of intelligence, including Russian communications, indicate Russian forces surrounding Ukraine are “clearly advancing their ability to invade” at any time according to a senior administration official.  “They are making themselves more ready.” This intelligence has let the US to conclude a Russian attack, including the assault on the capital Kyiv and could begin with no warning ,” the official said.

There are now estimated 130.000 or more Russian forces on the Ukraine border, according to two sources familiar with the recent assessments.  The US is not yet characterizing the Russian moves as “final preparations” because Putin still has the time to order a stop at any military action” the official said.  NATO defence ministers are meeting in Brussels on Wednesday and Thursday and right now “the US cannot rule out Russia’s military action during that ministerial” the official said.

Defence secretary, Lloyd Austin, is expected to attend the meeting in Russia.  The British Prime Minister urges Putin to step back “from the edge of the precipice.”

RUSSIA UKRAINE CRISIS

President Joe Biden to evacuate embassy staff from Ukraine amid fears of a Russian invasion.  President Biden and Vladimir Putin will speak today as the Western nations warn that Moscow will invade its neighbor at any moment.  Ukrainian and Russian officials met in the German capital on ending the conflict in eastern Ukraine but nearly nine hours of talks failed to produce a breakthrough on signing a joint document.  However, both sides have tried to continue the talks.

All UK troops are to be withdrawn from Ukraine this weekend as Russia could invade “at almost no notice,” the defense minister said.  Britons have been told to flee from the country immediately according to the British government’s advice, last night to say that UK nationals should “leave now while commercial means are still available”

All Greek and international tv channels and press are worrying about this crisis.  Could it be the beginning of World War 3 despite diplomatic efforts?

EKEINO TO KALOKAIRI - THAT SUMMER

                                                       THAT SUMMER

A wonderfully romantic and dramatic film of 1971 with Elena Nathanael, Lakis Komninos, Andreas Phillipides, and Roula Christophorou.  A dramatic love story is depicted in the film, it has a modern scenario that attracts the public.  The two actors lived a great love story as a couple and many of the audience wished them to be together in real life.

Here is the gist of the story:

WAR IN EUROPE ?

How big is Russia's military buildup around Ukraine?  It is the largest concentration of firepower since the end of the cold war.

The crisis on the Russian Ukrainian border continues to simmer.  On February the 5th American officials warned that Russia had gathered more than 70% of the forces that would be necessary for a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which could happen as soon as tomorrow warned Jake  Sullivan, America's national security adviser.  A day later Emmanuel Macron, the president of France visited Moscow as part of the diplomatic effort to stop it. "But how large and unusual is Russia's buildup?" US officials said and added that as many as 50.000 Ukrainian civilians could be killed and 25.000 Russian invaders.

Ukraine Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dmytro Kuleba, questioned the US media report:  "Do not believe the apocalyptic predictions.  Different capitals have different scenarios, but Ukraine has a strong army and unprecedented international support and the Ukrainians' faith in their country.  "This enemy should be afraid of us," said Kuleba.

Groups such as Amnesty International and the Norwegian Refugee Council criticized recently a military escalation between Ukraine and Russia that could result in a new refugee crisis, displacing millions of people from eastern Ukraine and territories controlled by pro-Russian forces.

"The threat of the use of military force by Russia is already affecting the human rights of millions of people from Ukraine and territories and beyond," said Agnes Cullamail, Amnesty's secretary-general.

The consequences of military force could be devastating. US officials quoted by US media also said a major Russian force is positioned in the Black Sea, equipped with 5 amphibious vessels that could land troops on Ukraine's southern coast.

Possible attacks on Ukraine on the lower end of the scale could take the form of sabotage, cyberattacks with the goal of removing the current government of Kyiv, they said.

President Zelesky's government is downplaying the present threat as 30.000 Russian troops are in Belarus for military excercises.

PANAGHIA SOUMELA

GREECE PROTESTS TO TURKEY OVER DJ'S PERFORMANCE AT SOUMELA MONASTERY

Greece’s Foreign Ministry said on Monday that a footage showing people dancing to electronic music played by a DJ at the Orthodox Christian Soumela  monastery in Turkey was “offensive and desecration of the monument.”

The ministry called the Turkish authorities “to do the utmost to prevent such acts from being repeated and resect the site, a candidate for UNESCO’s world heritage sites.  The recent images that were displayed on social media in which people seem to be dancing in the area of the historical monastery of Panaghia Soumela a desecration of this sacred monument,” it said.  A video released on social media showed a DJ  performing at the monastery.

What would happen if the same took place in a mosque?  Naturally, we Europeans are opposed to this behaviour because its sacrilege.  It is extremely unfortunate that we have such disagreeable neighbours, we don’t mean the people but the Turkish politicians who allow bellicose incidents to happen.

ABRAHAM LINCOLN

“ I too believe war to be wrong. It's the weakness, and the jealousy and the folly of men that make a thing so wrong possible.  But we are all weak and jealous and foolish. That's how the world is and we cannot outstrip the world.

Some of the worst of us are sullen and aggressive, just clumsy greedy pirates, others have outgrown that but the best of us have an instinct to resist aggression and listen to persuasion.   It might be a wrong instinct but it is there in millions of good people around the world."

ABRAHAM LINCOLN  the great USA President who abolished slavery, said these words but who was he addressing?  Can someone help me?

VIOLENCE IN SPORTS

As the dark side of sports-related violence with the murder of 19-year-old Alkis Cambanos in Thessaloniki, the police have launched a sweeping crackdown across the country with reports saying that it has compiled a list of 100 hooligans in Attica alone that it has its eye on.

They are hard-core fans of the capital’s largest teams have already been questioned and 150 have been arrested for sport’s violence. 12 people have been arrested for Alkis' tragic death and 2 more have escaped in Albania where they will be arrested by the Albanian police and returned to Greece  A road in Thessaloniki is named ALKIVIADIS KAMBANOS  in his honor.

The police told the press that 30% of the perpetrators are minors which is very worrying.  Why and how do children become criminals? What is wrong with our society?  We must be next to our children showing them, through our examples, that, among others, they should show compassion and trust towards mankind.

We were greatly impressed with Alkis' parents who in their profound grief, showed great magnanimity saying that they felt no hatred for their son's assassins but only sorrow because they were not loved as children.  How chivalrous can this tragic couple be?

GEORGE SOROS

George Soros experienced ethnic, religious, and political intolerance first-hand.   Born in Hungary in 1930, he lived throughout the Nazi occupation in 1944-1945 which resulted in the massacre of over 500.000 Hungarian Jews.  His own Jewish family survived by securing false identity papers concealing their religion and helping others to do the same.

After the war, as communists took over the power in Hungary Soros left for London in 1947, working as a railway porter and a night-club waiter to supply his studies at the London School of Economics.  In 1956 he emigrated to the USA, entering the world of finance and investments, where he made his fortune.  In 1973, he launched his own hedge fund and became one of the most successful investors in the United States.

George Soros used his fortune to create the Open Society Foundation, a network of foundations, partners and projects in more than 120 countries.  Their names and works reflect the influence of Soros, thinking of the philosophy of Karl Popper, which Soros had met at the London School of Economics.  In his book “Open Society” and “Its Enemies” Popper argues that no philosophy or ideology is the final arbiter and that societies can only flourish when they are under Democratic Governance, freedom, and respect of individual rights an approach at the core of the Open Society Foundation.

Soros started his philanthropy in 1979, giving scholarships to black South Africans under apartheid.  In 1980, he helped promote ideas in communist Hungary by funding academic visits to the West and supporting fledgling independent cultural groups.  After the fall of the Belin Wall, he created a Central European University as a space to foster critical thinking, which at the time, was an alien concept for most Universities in the former communist block.

With the Cold War over, he gradually expanded his philanthropy to Africa, Asia, Latin America, and to the United States. Supporting a vast array of new efforts, he created more accountable, democratic societies.  He was one of the early prominent voices against drugs and supported Americas’ anti-drug movement.

In the early 2000s, he became a vocal backer against religious, political, and ethnic intolerance.

WHAT DO WE OWE TO THE GREEKS?

Signing the Accession to the European Economic  Community

Sometimes in the late 1970s, as the European Economic Community decided to rebuff yet another of Greece’s successive bids for accession into the bloc.  Since the collapse of the right-wing junta in 1974, Valery Giscard d'Estaing dialed the European Commissions’ economic directorate “We can’t let Plato play the second league” was the French President’s famous answer when given the Commission's offered view that Greece’s economy wasn’t ready to join the forerunner of the EU.  In Giscard’s view, philosophy trumped economy.

Greece would finally join in 1981, yet similar paeans to its ancient history, the birthplace of Democracy, have been sung to ensure that it stayed as a member, with the notoriously philhellenic French President as one of the singers.  Both Nicolas Sarkozy and his rival   Francois Holland claim in their memoirs to have taken part in the talks over the debt relief between Greece and the so-called “troika” throughout the financially rocky 2010s.  This decade Emmanuele Macron has turned France’s Grecian allegiance up a notch. Finally, on last year’s commemoration of the bicentennial of Greece’s independence in 1821.  Why does Greece loom large over the European and by extension Western mind?

More puzzling, why do professional historians and exalted philhellenes alike trace the modern Greek nation directly to the ancient city-states of the ancient period When evidence of direct lineage is so secure.

SOCRATES

                                                           SOCRATES

Socrates was a Greek philosopher and the main source of Western thought.  Little is known about his life except what is written by his students Plato and Xenophon.  He was born in Athens circa 470 BC His SOCRATIC MEHOD laid the groundwork of the Western system of logic and philosophy.  What we know of his life is through the writings of his students Plato and Xenophon.    Socrates believed that philosophy should achieve great results for society.

Socrates was ugly, but he possessed a different kind of attractiveness from his brilliant mind and penetrating thought.

When the political climate changed Socrates was sentenced to death because of his supposedly weird ideas.  by poisoning in 399 BC and he accepted this judgment rather than fleeing into exile.  The ancient Greek philosophers including Plato, Xenophon, and Aristotle provide a unique and viral portrayal of Socrates'.philosophy and personality.

Socrates was not from a noble family, he received a basic Greek education and followed his father's craftsmanship who was a mason, so he worked a few years as a mason before turning to philosophy and bringing his fellow countrymen true happiness.  He asked both the elite and common people alike seeking to arrive at political and ethical lengths.   "Knowledge provides happiness," he told them.   He was wise enough to recognize his ignorance: the Socratic paradox  ONE THING I KNOW THAT I KNOW NOTHING " En oida oti outhen oida".  He was a brilliant philosopher that recognized his illiteracy.

MURDERUS ATTACK AND SAVAGE INJURIES IN THESSALONIKI

The murderous attack against 19-year-old Alkiviadis Kampanos took place shortly after midnight at Charilaou, Thessaloniki, and three of his friends were seriously injured by 10 murderers. Alkis and his friends were walking when they were attacked by 10 individuals who came out of 2 cars and asked them in perfect Greek what was the football team when they replied that it was Aris they were attacked with knives and scythes with the tragic results.

Our deepest condolences to Alkis's family and may they always remember in their deep grief that they had a wonderful son and brother, and wishes to his friends a speedy and complete recovery.

US AND UCRAINE AT ODDS OVER THREAT OF RUSSIAN INVASION

Tensions between Moscow and Kyiv are the highest in years, with a large Russian troop building around the shared borders of the two former Soviet Republics.

Diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis continue between US President Joe Biden and Ukraine leader Volodymyr Zelensky on the “risk levels” of a Russian invasion “did not go well” said a senior Ukraine official.  The White House disputes the account.  The Kremlin said that written responses from US and NATO and Russia’s security demands failed to address its concerns. Does this crisis threaten world peace?
