PERFORMING ARTS AND THE COVID -19 PANDEMIC IN GREECE

 


The Greek Minister of Culture and Sports, Lina Mendoni, said that without theatre and cinema "we shall all be taken to a psychiatrist" referring to the government policies which implement to protect performing arts due to measures taken to stop COVID - 19 spread. 


Speaking on television, on Sunday Mrs Mendoni said that the culture section has faced particularly serious problems due to the coronavirus pandemic.  Theatres and cinemas continue to be closed, while all music performances have been suspended.   


The minister insisted that without cinema and theatre this winter would be very difficult for all citizens.  "If we do not have the opportunity to escape with the help of performing arts, we shall be taken to the psychiatrist.," she said, adding that they will be measures for people to be able to watch performances and shows that will be announced on Monday. 


The Minister of Culture said that a campaign is being scheduled in order to convince people that live performances are safe.  Among the measures to be announced are the suspension of the limited number of people in cinemas and theatres, and keeping distances, with empty seats in between, 1.5 metres apart.   Discussions have been made in order for the subsidies to be fair and cover the crucial points of the owners, producers and artists.   


Regarding health protocol, Mrs Mendoni said they will be announced as soon as the joint government decision is issued on Monday when all measures will be described in detail.     Among the measures are the mandatory use of masks, the systems of entry and exit of audiences in big theatres, the appropriate ventilation, the electronic ticket and the suspension of intervals in movies and plays.

The ideal theatre for distancing in this coronavirus age.  But this only in summer.  During winter we have to obey the above measures in order to remain healthy and knowledgeable.
