ZELENSKY COMPARES UKRAINE WAR TO BATTLE AGAINST NAZIS


Ukranian President Volodymyr Zelensky addressimg a joint session of the US Congress on Wednesday after leaving Ukraine for the first time since the start of the war. 

Zelensky drew comparisons between Ukranian forces fighting in the frontline against Russia and the American forces who battled Nazi Germany in the Second World War. 

The Ukranian President portrayed the conflct as a broader battle for the fate of democracy.  Zelensky delivered the speach to the Congress after a press conference and personal meeting with US President Joe Biden.  The latter pledged that the US would provide Ukraine with a 1.85 billion dollars military aid package and Patriot missile system battery.  

The Ukrainian President was greeted with a Standing Ovation when he entered the Capitol Building. "Ukraine holds its line and will never surrender,"  Zelensky told the Congress. He said that Russia is "the tyrrany and cruelty against free people. 

Zelensky also invoked a brave image to the American audience saying "Just like the brave American soldiers which held their lines and fought back Hitler's forces during Christmas 1944, brave Ukrainian soldiers are doing the same for Putin's forces this Christmas."  

During the speach Zelensky unfurled an Ukrainian flag which he said was from te battlefield. 

Vice-President Kamila Harris and the Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi held up the blue and yellow banner.

President Joe Biden said: "In February when I met President Zelensky in Munich at the eve of Russia's war I told him the United States will stand firmly with the people of Ukraine.  

Today, ten months later, at the White House we honour Ukrainian bravery of soldiers and civilians as we renew that commitment/"
