Private talks have been taking place concerning the return of the Parthenon Sculptures to Greece according to the Greek newspaper "Ta Nea". The report stated that chairman of the British Museum, George Osborn, has discussed the status of the scuptures with the Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
The Parthenon Marbles, also known as Elgin Marbles, have been at the heart of dispute between Greece and the United Kingdom, since the historically significant artifacts were stolen from the Acropolis in the early 19th century.
The newspaper reported that the British Meuseum has no immediate plans to dismantle its collection of the Parthenon Marbles following confidencial discussions between the Greek Prime Minister with the chairman of the British Museum.
Talks between Mitsotakis and Osborn have been taking place since November 2021, the newspaper stated. A meeting between the two took place last week. Mitsotakis was in the UK for engagements with the British royal framily and to promote Greek business interests.
On November 28th Mitsotakis commented that there was a sence of "progress and momentum" regarding the efforts to repatriate the Parthenon Marbles to Greece.
