A major disaster hit the city of Chania in Crete on the 8th of December with the loss of more than 300 lives.
On the 8th of December 1986, a ferry on the Chania Piraeus route sank off the rocky islet of Falkonera More than 300 people were lost in one of the worst naval disasters in the maritime history of Greece.
The ferry boat "Heraklion" sailed from Souda Bay, Crete to the port of Piraeus with a crew of 73, and 121 passengers were, unfortunately, drowned in the area with winds blowing at 9 Beaufort magnitude.
I clearly remember this tragic navel disaster that left all Greeks mourning with their loved ones for the loss of so many innocent lives.
