HISTORY OF MERMAIDS AND THEIR 0RIGINS IN ANCIENT GREEK SIRENS

Mermaids folklore creatures with the head and upper body of a woman and the body of a fish appear in many countries around the world. Many have traced the contemporary conception of a mermaid to the ancient Greek figure of a siren despite the fact that similar creatures can be found all over the world.

Sirens are dangerous creatures in ancient Greek mythology across the world, the  fearsome figures that are depicted as half-woman and half-bird perched on rocks singing seductive songs.

They hoped to ensnare nearby sailors to the dangerous rocks and with their seductive songs to cause shipwrecks.

The most famous mention of sirens in ancient Greek literature is from Homer's  famous ancient book The Odyssey in which Odysseus is warned by the sorceress Circe of the iresistable songs of the sirens. Odysseus ordered his crew to tie him to the mast of the ship and not to untie him until they passed the creatures and to put into their ears beeswax.

Upon hearing the beautiful song Odysseus begged his crew to rrelease him but they refused and sailed away.

According to some ancient authors the sirens were fated to die if they heared the song and resisted therefore Odysseus was the first to kill the creatures who killed themselves falling into the sea while he fled to safety.

CRUCEFIXION OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST

The crucifixion and death of our Lord Jesus Christ occured  in the first century in Judea and is recalled in the New Testament.

Unfortunately our Lord Jesus is arrested by the high Jewish priests and by Pontius Pilate who sentenced Him to flagellation and then handed Him over to the soldiers for Crucefixion.

Jesus was stripped of His clothing and they offered Him vinegar and gall to drink, He was then hung between two thieves and according to the Gosple of Saint Mark, He died on the first hour of the day about 3 pm.

During this time the soldiers fixed a sign on the top of the Cross saying Jesus of Nazareth King of the Jews. written in three langjages Hebrew, Latin and Greek.

Then they divided His garments between themselves and cast a lot for His seamless robe. The Gosple of Saint John states that one of the soldiers pierced His side to be certain that our Lord died,

Our Lord asked His Father to forgive the people who killed Him because they did not know what they were doing.

Christians all over the world commemorate every year the crucefixion of our Lord with passion and anguish but also with happiness for the glorious day of Jesus Christ"s Resurrection.

HOLY WEDNESDAY GREEK ORTHODOX RECALL CHRIST'S ANOINTING WITH MYRRH

On Holy Wednesday Christians remember the act of Christ's feet anointment by the sinful woman Many Magdalene before His crusifixion.

It is also the time when churchgoers anoint themselves with Holy Myrrh in a solemn evening  service.

In the afternoon in all churches the mystery of the Holy Gospels are read and the washing of the Apostles' feet by our Lord Jesus Christ.

The faithful also remember the Last Supper and the anonting of the Apostles feet by our Lord Jesus.

The faithful also remember the nefarious plans of Judas Iskariot to betray Jesus. On Wednesday people aslo remember Mary Magdalene who anonted our Lord's feet not simply and in stasrk contrast of the once chosen disciple.

The triodon or short hymn shows that Judas Iskariot perished not simply bcause he betrayed his Master but because, having fallen into the act of betrayal he then believed the possibility of forgiveness of his sins by Lord Jesus.

It is believed tha there are no sharp lines between bodily and spirtual needs and preparation for the reception of Holy Communion on Sunday/

On April 10th 1826 and after a year of siege the 10.000 Missolonghi inhabitants made a heroic Exodus of Missolonghi adding another brilliant page to the Greek War of Independence history.

It was April 15th 1825, three years after the failed attempt to occupy Missolonghi that the Ottoman armies returned to besiege the city that had become the seat of Western Continental Greece.

The army of Rashid Memmet Pasha or Kiutahis as the Greeks called him, numbered 20.000 men began the second siege of the city later to be joined by another 10.000 men under Ibrahim Pasha who returned from the Peloponnese without help from the rest of the Greeks due to the civil war and having to cope with superior enemy forces.the residents of Missolonghi managed to resist for a whole year.

The three-man committee composed by of Ioannis Papadiamdopoulos, Demitrios Themelis and Georgios Kanovas organized the city's defence.

The fortress of the city had been restored following the efforts of Alexandros Mavrocrdatos the great phihellene Lord Byron and engeneer Michael Kokkinis.
