THE FIRST AFRICAN-AMERICAN POET AND HER LOVE FOR ANCIENT GREECE

In 1761, Phillis Wheatly a young West-African girl was caught and brought to America on a slave ship.

There Susanna Wheatly, wife of prominent  Boston businessman, John Wheatly bought her at an auction to serve as a lady's maid.

The girl would rise from her humble beginings to become the first African-American girl. One with a penchant for Ancient Greece.
