BREATHTAKING RUINS OF MYSTRAS MARK CENTER OF BYZANTINE POWER IN GREECE


 

Mystras, known as the ""wonder of Moreas" which lies in the southeasterm Poloponnesian Peninsula, was once the center of Byzantine power in southern Greece.  The town was named by UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1989.

As the center of Byzantine power, Mystras quickly attracted inhabitants and institutions, the Bishopric wastransferred there from Sparta and its cathedral, the Metropolis chrch of Hagios Demetrios wasbuilt after 1264. 

In 1448, the last Byzantine emperor, Constantine X1 Palaeologos was crowned there.
