THE BOY PLAYING WITH YO-YO SHOWN ON ANCIENT GREEK POTTERY

The very first depiction of a yo-yo anywhere in the world is found n an ancient Greek vase from the 5th century BC where a boy can be seen playing with the timeless toy.

The yo-yo is the second oldest known toy, after dolls according to historians. Its origin is paced in China after a toy known as the diabolo.

From China the yo-yo traveled to ancient Greece. Through time it became popular all over the world. In ancient Greece, Yo-yos were made out of wood, terracotta, metal, and clay.

It is believed that in ancient Greek society the toy was used as an offering to the gods. Some also believe as a coming-of-age ritual for boys.

These ancient toys were often decorated with pictures of Greek gods. As children began to enter adulthood in antiquity. it became a tradition to place their yo-yos on the family altar to pay homage as a rite of passage.

The vase depicting the boy playing with the toy, dating back to 440 BC is exhibited in the National Archaeological Museum in Athens along with fragments and a disc of the popular toy,

28TH OCTOBER 1940

"Oxi day" is a Greek National Holiday with military and student parades across the country. public buildings and private residences are festooned with the blue and white Greek flag.

Oxi day is observed by all the Greek communities of the diaspora, including major cities in the USA, Canada, Australia, and wherever Greece is diplomatically represented.  It is a day of proud celebration and commemoration.

Ioannis Metaxas, the Greek Prime Minister bravely refused the ultimatum handed to him by the Italian ambassador to Greece, Emmanuele Grazzi, which came from the dictator Mussolini and Metaxas replied: "Alors, c'est la guerre" (so, we are at war.)   The Greek soldiers. outnumbered by their Italian counterparts, pushed them deep back into Albania.

However, if the Greek Prime Minister, Ioannis Metaxas had said "yes" to the Italian ambassador Grazzi it would have been a disaster for Greece and Europe who were bravely fighting against the AXIS forces.

Mark Mazower called the Greek resistance "The first Axis setback of the entire war, the Greeks surprised everybody with the tenacity of their resistance."

Even Winson Churchill said that heroes fight like Greeks!

They were neither up nor down

THE ANCIENT CITY OF MAGDALA UNEARTHED NEAR TIBERIAS ISRAEL

The ancient city of Magdala is prominently mentioned in the Bible as the hometown of Jesus Christ's disciple Mary Magdalene was unearthed recently in excavations that took place when a retreat complex was constructed outside Tiberias, Israel.

Archaeologists state that what they found there was "one of the most significant finds in the last 50 years."

The town on the shores of Galilee found in Hellenistic times was a thriving, prosperous fishing village when the Romans invaded Galilee in 67 AD. It was large enough to have stone-paved streets and an elaborate first-century synagogue, but the village had tragically fallen to ruin through religious upheaval, military conquests, and the vicissitudes of the time.

It was only after a Catholic priest from Spain had a vision of opening a religious retreat center on the site of ancient Magdala in 2009, that the ancient town was uncovered after excavations.

CORONAVIRUS IS MAKING CLEAR THERE IS NO SOLIDARITY IN THE EU

Greater sharing of resources hospital capacity and even healthcare staff are needed to cope with pandemics in the future, according to researchers examining the public health response to coronavirus across the EU.

They have found that the level of preparedness across Europe was patchy, despite warnings for years, if not decades, from health experts that a global pandemic was likely.

While some countries had built up pandemic preparedness, stockpiles of personnel protective equipment (PPE), medicines such as anti-virals, and other vital equipment, others had very little.

"Countries that had those preparedness stocks, had trained nurses and doctors of how to respond to all kinds of different pandemics have fared better," said Professor, Gyorgy Kovacs, an expert in humanitarian logistics and supply chain management at the Hanku School of Economics, in Helsinki, Finland. "They bought themselves a lot of time early in the first wave."

MEET MILLIONAIRE AKSHATA MURTHY WIFE OF THE UK PRIME MINISTER RISHI SUNAK

As I have written before. Rishi Sunak is the new Prime Minister of Great Britain and by his side is his wife, Akshata Murthy, the fashion designer, and Indian billionaire who founded Infosys.

The two initially met while studying at Stanford and, in 2009 decided to get married in a two-day wedding in Bangalore.  As for 2022, Sunak and Murthy are one of the richest couples in Great Britain, they are richer than Queen Elizabeth was.

Murthy is the head of the fashion label Akshata Designs and is also the director of a venture capital firm founded by her father in 2010.

Her love and passion for clothes began at a very young age, as she told Vogue India in 2011, adding "I like the story of a particular garment, its authenticity, craftsmanship, and protected high heritage."

The couple has a minimum of four properties, including a 7 million pound house in Kensington, where they live with their two children Krishna and Anoushka according to The Times.

The fashion designer is said to have 0.9 percent shares in her family's tech firm worth 430 million pounds. These assets make Indian-born Murthy richer than Queen Elizabeth.

Another major investment her family is part of the joint investment with Amazon worth 90 million pounds. They also own shares in the firm running Jamies Italian and the burger chain Wendy's in India.

IAEA TO INSPECT UKRAINE SITES FOR "DIRTY BOMBS"

Russia continues to press its allegations that Ukraine plans to use the so-called "dirty bombs" on its own territory and says it will take it up with the United Nations.  Ukrainian and Western officials have denounced the claims as a "pretext to aggression".

Kyiv has requested of UN's watchdog agency to inspect the nuclear power facilities in order to disprove Moscow's allegations.

A "dirty bomb" is made to contaminate a large area with radioactivity making uninhabitable for residents there without using a nuclear explosion.

RISHI SUNAK FAVORITE TO BECOME THE UK PRIME MINISTER

Rishi Sunak, the son of immigrants from India is the new leader of the Conservative Party and will be the new Prime Minister after Penny Mordant announced, at the last minute her withdrawal to replace Liz Truss.

In a statement issued on Twitter just before 2 pm, Ms. Mordant announced her last-minute withdrawal said:

"It is clear that colleagues feel that we need certainty" and that "as a result, we have chosen our new Prime Minister," she said "The decision is a historic one and shows, once again, the diversity and talent of our party. Rishi has my full support."

I was born in British India, so many years ago, and I am delighted that a Briton of Indian descent will be the next Prime Minister of Great Britain.  My best wishes to you and your family and I am certain you will enjoy your new "job" despite the fact that it certainly is a hot potato,   I am very proud of you Mr. Sunak!

WHY ISN'T THE UK HAVING AN ELECTION

An election in the UK seems unlikely despite the fact that the ruling Conservative Party will soon decide on the third Prime Minister in seven weeks!

After Boris Johnson and Liz Truss resigned, Rishi Sunak, former Chancellor of the Exchequer is now the favorite to to suceed them in Downing Street.

Lis Truss resigned as the Conservative party leader just 45 days after being elected to that position. She was forced out by her back-benchers because of a misjudged mini-budget about her  competency and a catastrophic collapse in the Conservative poll ratings.  She is now destined to become the shortest-serving Prime Minister in British history.

Opposition politicians are now demanding  early general elections.  Voters at the last election gave her their backing for someone else to be Prime Minister and the government party's mandate was tide to that individual. Whatever opposition party demand, there is no constitutional requirement for early general elections.

The United Kingdom is a parliamentary system, and the government of the day receives its authority from being  able to command the confidence of the House of Commons.

Under the current rules, the next general elections will be held in January 2025.

BREXIT EATS ITS CHILDREN

According to the Greek newspaper Kathimerini Brexit eats its children. Nikos Konstandaras wrote in Kathemerini that it is amazing to think the democratic Britons should find themselves in a political whirwind.

When Prime Minister, Liz Truss, was forced to resign because her MPs lost confindence for her.  Her short tenure destabilised the British economy, society and the Conservartive Party.

Was Boris Johnson forced to resign because he lied and his erratic behaviour.  He was elected by the Conservative Party memebers with his promise to "get Brexit done" without expressing concern as to how and with what cosequences.

Tereza May, on the other hand, tried hard to achieve a historic exit agreement, although she was initially in favour of Britain remaining in the European Union but her MPs were not.

With three Prime Ministers resiging shows why BREXIT eats its children.

MINOAN-ERA SKELETON AND STUNNING NECKLACE UNEARTHED IN CRETE

An intact skeleton of a woman lying next to a stunning meclace and other important artifacts from the early Minoan Era (circa 2.600 BC) were unearthed at the archaeological site of Sisi in Crete.

Sisi. located at the prefectorate of Lasithi represents one of the most important Bronze Age excavations in Crete during the past decade, because of its extent chronological range, and the type of buildings uncovered.

The site sits on the coastal hill of Kephali at Agios Antonios locally known as Buffo.  Its stratigic position attracted the attention of early settlers and from its initial foundation around 2.600 BC and it remained occupied until the end of the Bronze Age around 1.200 BC.

Further excavations have revealed a decorated floor, constructed with a high-quality mortar and with a well-made 33 meter (109 feet) long clay drainage pipe, the ministry said. Singnificant finds from lesser-known eras have also been unearthed in other parts of the hill a residence destroyed in the Mid-Menoan era.

During its early history, Sisi was one of the beautiful hamlets which dotted the coast of Malea Bay. but soon it would ourgrow its neihbours and become the second settlement after Malea in the region.

"After the abandonment of the settlement by its people, who left almost of theit mateial culture in loco, a monmental structure was constructed to the east of the village." the Greek Minister of Cuture said.

"This building became the heart of the later West Wing. Even though it was destroyed by fire in 2.500 BC, it remains almost fully incorporated into the construction of monumental buildings with a courtyard. which was cinstructed around 1.700 BC," the statement noted.

Sisi like so many Minoan settlements and palace centers was destroyed by fire and the nature of occuoation drestically changed.

Neopalatian houses were partly incorporated and overbuilt by a new type of structure that betrays influences of the Mycenean Mainland.

Late in the 13th century BC the site was suddenly abandoned. Fortunately, apart from the metal, all other objects were left in place, allowing a perfect reconstruction of its internal functioning.

The Sisi archaological project started excavating the site in 2007 because of the University of Louvain under the aupices of the Belgian School in Athens.

THE HISTORY OF HORSES IN ANCIENT GREECE

Horses in ancient Greece have always been particularly significant and they played an almost mythological role in history. The ancient Greeks considered them the noblest of creatures and they became a permanent feature of almost every aspect of daily life.

They were accorded the highest value, however, by those in the upper classes who could afford them because they were expensive, given their significance to the gods. Furthermore, they were used for hunting, racing, and traveling.

The relationship between man and beast in antiquity was very strong and its roots were deep. The two were tied together intrinsically both by nature and the gods.

They were thought to have been created by Poseidon, the god of the sea. Thus in ancient Greek lore, the status of these noble creatures was raised to the almost divine level, mostly for their heroic courage at war.

Yet even the lowest carthorse played creating the society that was the foundation of Western science, logic and philosophy. They were depicted on vases and sculptures throughout the centuries.

Bucephalus, the horse of Alexander the Great is one of the most famous in ancient Greece. History describes him as being an imposing creature with a wonderful head, a thick black coat, and an eye-catching white star on the brow beneath the reins.

HOW CAN WE STOP MAKING ERRORS

We must stop doing too much

Eliminate distractions

Clarify and ask questions

Get a second set of eyes

Take breaks to refresh with a mental pause.

DEALING WITH PROPAGANDA

Dealing with propaganda, misinformation and fake news have the strength to polarise public opinion. to promote violent acts, hate speech and to undermine a democratic way of life.

It is extremely important for schools to provide their students with a strong education on media and information literacy as part of their curriculum.

Two-thirds of European Union citizens report that they read and heard false news at least once a week

Propaganda changes our thoughts and beliefs so we must choose carefully what we hear and read.

A HARVARD PROFESSOR'S THREE RULES FOR REMAINING HAPPY

The world economy shrank for the last two quarters, leading many to speculate that we are in a very serious recession. Surely anxiety about the recession is high.  Does that mean that the next few months will be miserable and that a shrinking economy will be a shrinking joy?

"Yes and no", says Harvard professor Arther Brooks in his latest "Atlantic" focused on the science of happiness.

"The unhappiness that accompanies a recession is real and you are irrational if you feel it. Your instincts might tell you about this unfortunate feeling of agony by focusing on the problem seriously and managing your affairs meticulously. But this is not the best way to alleviate your misery," he writes.

Here are three rules that Brooks gives so that one's happiness is intact;

1. Stop checking

2. Turn off the news

3, Remember you are not alone in this ordeal, and have a cup of tea.

A TOWN CALLED SALAMINA IN THE MOUNTAINS OF COLOMBIA

A town called Salamina located deep in the mountains of Colombia has surprising ties to ancient Greece taking its name from the battle of Salamina in 480 BC.

The picturesque city of Salamina is located in the Caldas area at an altitude of 1800 meters (5.900 feet) in the Andes mountain range. It was established 190 years ago and now has approximately 15.000 residents.

The town has produced an amazing number of poets. musicians and artists for its size and has, therefore, earned the nickname "the city of light."

What is really impressive, however, is the history of the city and how it got its name.  The town's website relates the story in great detail.

Translated in Spanish shows that the New World has memorialized the glory of Ancient Greece. forever and will never be forgotten in the Americas.

The town history goes to note that "In the decree foundation General Santander asked that be given the name of Salamina, to commemorate the battle of Salamina fought by the Greeks against the Persians in 480 BC where the Greeks won Xerxes' army.

STUNNING ANCIENT GREEK SANCTUARY HONOURS GOD APOLLO

Despotiko lies about seven hundred meters southeast of the shores of Antiparos. It is situated in the middle of the Cyclades and on clear days it is possible to see other surrounding islands from Despotiko.

Currently, the island is accessible only by boat, from the island of Antiparos.  The strait separating the two islands is only about a meter deep and the island of Tsimitiri is situated between the two. The strait, therefore, is very shallow. This might be because there could have been a link between Antiparos and Despotiko in ancient times.

According to several scientists. Paros, Antiparos, and Despotiko were connected into one landmass thousands of years ago.

Archaeologists say that the earliest indication of activity on the island date back to the Early Iron Age while the period of greatest prosperity is documented to have been in the middle of the 6th century BC. It was during this time that the Temple of Apollo was likely constructed. Along the temple, there were other ceremonial buildings, a banqueting hall, (hestiatorion), and an aqueduct.

Excavations have recorded 88 fragments of marble kouroi in addition to marble bases of statues of different types have been uncovered.

Excavations have also uncovered many artifacts from the archaic and classical periods, including vases, basins, bottles, lamps, pots and amphorae.  Metallic objects were also found, They were estimated to be from the 6th century BC.

The project is led by Yiannos Kourayos a Greek archaeologist with vast experience and a wealth of knowledge in the field.  In a recent interview, Kourayos compared the importance of Despotiko with Delos.

"Delos was under the influence of Naxos and later of Athens although there were offerings and sculptures from Paros," the Greek archaeologist told the press.

"What we now see is that Delos was a Hellenistic and Roman town.  Despotiko must have been more important and attracted more worshipers from the surrounding islands compared to the one in Delos."

THE 1920S SONG INSPIRED BY GREEK FRUIT SELLER.

The song "Yes we have no bananas today." was based on a Greek fruit seller that became an unlikely but timeless hit after it was released for the first time in March 1923.

The tune was composed by Frank Silver and Irwin Cohn after their encounter with the Greek fruit seller who had the unique practice of beginning every sentence with a "yes" as Silver explained to Time Magazine.

"I am an American of Jewish ancestry with a wife and a young son, About a year ago my little orchestra was playing at a Long Island hotel. To and from the hotel I stopped at a fruit stand owned by a Greek who began every sentence with "yes." The jingle of his idiom haunted me. Finally, I wrote the verse and Cohn composed the tune," Silver recalled.

Upon its release, the song was an unlikely hit with its silly yet endearing verse and catchy lyrics.

"Yes, we have no bananas today" was sung by some of the famous stars of the day, including Billy Jones, Billy Murray, Arther Hall, and Irving Kaufman.

The opening verse which might seem silly today reads: "There's a fruit store at the end of the street that is owned by a Greek and keeps good things to eat. But you should hear him speak!"

He never answered no he just said "yes there are no bananas today.  The refrain, which became iconic, reads "Yes, we have no bananas today but we have string beans and onions, cabbages and scallions and all sorts of fruit we have an old-fashioned "tomahto" and a Long Island "potahto" (like the English pronounce it but not the potato). Yes, we have no bananas today.
