WORLD ANIMAL DAY SHOWS HOW ANCIENT GREEKS LOVED THEIR DOGS


 Ancient Greeks had great love and respect for their dogs. cherished them as companions, protectors, and hunters as evidenced by several dog tombstones discovered all over Greece.

The most famous story about ancient Greeks and the pet canines comes from Homer's Odyssey written at 800 BC It is a story of the unending loyalty of dogs to men.  

Argos is the loyal friend of King Odysseus.  His master finally returns home and is not recognized by the hostile suitors who are vying to receive the hand of Penelope Odysseus's wife. But Argos recognized his master, drove the suitors away, and waged his tail in greeting.
