The Palace of Knossos located about 5 kilometers (3 miles)
south of Heraklion, on Kephala hill, was the largest of all the Minoan Palaces
in Crete. It was also the center of the
highly sophisticated civilization that flourished on the island over 3.500
years ago.
At the beginning of the last century, it was discovered and
excavated by the German businessman and pioneer in archaeology, Heinrich Schliemann, who in 1870 excavated the
site believed to be Troy.
Before that, it was only mentioned in Greek mythology.
