Christian Amanpour, CNN’s chief international anchor confessed
to viewers, yesterday, that she was diagnosed with cancer in the ovaries.
“I’ve had a successful major surgery to remove it and I’m
now undergoing several months of chemotherapy for the best possible long-term prognosis,
and I am confident,” Amanpour said at the beginning of her daily television show.
Christian Amanpour is one of the most famous journalists in
the world due to her fearless coverage of international conflicts. In her live announcement, she stated how
common ovarian cancer is and how it affects “millions of women around the world”.
From her home in London, Amanpour said she feels “fortunate to
have life insurance through work and incredible doctors who are treating me in
a country underpinned by the brilliant NHS”, referring to the National Health Service
in the UK.
After speaking about her surgery and chemotherapy she said: I’m
telling you this in the interest of transparency, but in truth, really, mostly to
an early diagnosis.”
She continued that she wanted to “urge women to educate
themselves on this disease, to get all the necessary screenings and scans that
you can, to always listen to your bodies and of course to ensure that your
legitimate medical concerns are not dismissed or diminished.”
I was extremely sorry to hear about Mrs. Amanpour being sick, and I wish her a speedy and total recovery in the not-so-distant future. I really admire this fantastic woman for her brilliant journalistic endeavors, her intelligence, her courage, her lucidity, and her spunk. Congratulations Mrs. Amanpour!
