SIX EUROPEAN CITIES WILL USE ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE TO MOVE AGAINST CARBON EMISSIONS

Helinski, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Paris, Stavanger and Tulin will challenge companies to develop innovative  solutions in fields of energy and mobility,

"A14Cities" is a three-year EU funded project bringing together leading European cities looking for artificial intelligence solutions to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and meet their climate commitments.  The above mentioned European cities were involved in this project.  The cities will go through a  Pre-Commercial Procurement process that enabled the public sector to steer the development of new solutions directly towards its needs.

First, the buying authorities will define their needs and requirements for solutions in the energy and mobility fields that they would like to see developed in order to move towards carbon neutrality.  Then larger companies will design innovative solutions by applying artificial intelligence and related technologies such as 5G, Internet of things, cloud computing and big data applications.

The total funding amount to be divided between the selected suppliers through the whole process is 4.6 million Euros.

"Cities and regions have a lot to say and do when it comes to climate action,  We are very well placed to support our governments in achieving the climate goals A14Ciies shows our leadership and our willingness to the power of pre-commercial procurement to boost innovation, artificial intelligence and sustainability in Europe," said Kaisa Sibelius, coordinator of the "A14Cities"  project and project manager of Forum Vision Helsinki.

With over 70% of EU citizens now living in urban areas traffic congestion, and inefficient transport systems still persist across the continent and account for 24% of gas emissions on European cities.  Artificial intelligence and technology have already proven that they can help optimise the traditional transport system and process to have a more positive impact on the environment.

Energy, crucial for cities' infrastructure, heating, cooling, security and light, is the biggest polluting agent, accounting for 58% of GHG emissions.  In this context, artificial intelligence technologies can be issued for storage needs, more efficient energy users and the integration of renewable sources.

Furthermore, artificial intelligence can help citizens to better understand how their energy consumption impacts their carbon footprints and gives them tools that can facilitate the change.
