3rd NOVEMBER - INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PERSONS WITH SPECIAL DISABILITIES

The 3rd of November is the International Day of  Persons with Disabilities which was inaugurated by the United Nations in 1992.

Disability inclusion is an essential condition of confirming human rights, sustainable development of leaving no one behind, the commitment of realising the rights of persons with disabilities is not only a matter of justice, but it is also a matter of civilisation.

Even under normal conditions, people with disabilities are less likely to access healthcare, education, employment and participation in the community.  The global crisis of COVID - 19 is, unfortunately, enlarging the pre-existing irregularities.

People with disabilities, one billion people, one million in Greece, are one of the most excluded groups in our society.

The annual observance of persons with disabilities aims to promote the rights and wellbeing of these unfortunate people in all spheres of society and development and to increase the awareness of people with disabilities in every aspect of political, social and economic life.

Antonio Guterres, the United Nations Secretary-General, said:

"As the world recovers from the pandemic we must ensure that the aspirations and rights of persons with disabilities are included and protected in an inclusive, accessible and sustainable post COVID world.  This vision will only be achieved through active consultation with persons with disabilities and their organisations."
