The European Council and the
Ibero-American academy of Yuste granted the XIII Carlos V European Award for
the first time to a European initiative, the Cultural Roots of the Council of
Europe.
The Cultural Roots of the Council of Europe is a
certification awarded by the Council to networks promoted by the Council of
Europe such as democracy, human rights and intercultural exchanging in the
framework of cultural tourism.
The Carlos V European award honours people, organisations, projects or initiatives that contribute “the enhancement of Europe’s cultural and historical values.” His Majesty the King of Spain presented the prize to the Council of Europe’s Secretary-General, Thorbjorn Jugland in conjunction with Europe Day, during a ceremony at the Royal Monastery of Yuste.
