KALAVRITA THE FIRST GREEK TOWN TO BE LIBERATED FROM THE OTTOMANS

On March 21st 1821 the Greek rebels started the siege of Kalavrita making it the first Greek town to be  liberated by the Ottomans, thus declaring the Greek War of Independence,

On the morning of March 21st 600 Greek fighters were sworn under the plane tree of the monastery of Agia Lavra to fight against the Ottoman Turks and according tomsome historians "Not one Turk will be left in the Peloponnese.

A meeting folowed when Bishop Palaion Patron Germanos called for all Greeks to revolt and raise the flag of revolution or banner dipicting the Assumption of the Vingin Mary that was on the gate of the Temple of the Agia Lavra.
