THE SECOND ANNIVERSARY OF THE DEVASTSATING FIRE AT MATI THAT LEFT 121 PEOPLE DEAD

Two years have passed since a devastating wildfire burnt 102 innocent people to death, hundreds injured and some maimed for life.

The Fire Raging at Mati

The Devastating Results

The tragic incident took place at the small summer resort of Mati, 24 kilometres south of Athens. The destructive fire broke out on the early afternoon of the 23rd July 2018, with strong winds spreading the fire instantaneously towards the beach.

Also, 1.500 homes were burnt to ashes while numerous buildings were destroyed beyond recognition.

Could this tragedy have been prevented?   Yes, if the state sent fire brigade aeroplanes and helicopters when the fire first appeared.  There were, unfortunately, many ommissions that day, the laws were they not implemented, as they wrongly transferred the fire brigade power from Mati to Kinetta another area outside Attica.
