Turkey's president, Tayyip Erdogan, has signed a decree declaring the world-famous Greek Orthodox cathedral Agia Sophia, will be changed from a museum into a mosque. Built during the 6th century as a Greek Orthodox Christian Church, itis now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Greece and the Russian Orthodox Church, but unfortunately not the state, have strongly criticised the change, while the USA, UNESCO and Pope Francis have expressed deep regret at the alteration of the status of the cathedral.
There is a diplomatic fever in Athens because, we Greeks are furious with Erdogan's incongruous act, as we consider Agia Sophia a symbol of our country and Orthodoxy. We sincerely hope that the public opinion of all the civilised countries of the world will be on our side because this is not a bilateral issue, between Greece and Turkey, it is an international case.
