The Site of the Old Athens Airport at Hellikon |
Finally, Greece inaugurated, on Friday, the start of a construction work of a long-delayed major development project at Hellinikon, on the site of the old Athens airport.
Lamda Developments is undertaking the investment plans to turn the seaside area into a complex of public parks, luxury residences, a yachting marina and a casino at the total cost of about 8 billion euros.
"Today is a very important and symbolic day. By demolishing the buildings of the old airport, we are laying the foundations of the new Hellinikon, one of the larger, if not the largest projects in the Mediterranean will be realised in this area", said the Greek prime minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis. ..."Hellinikon will create more than 80.000 jobs, 10.000 jobs will be created only during the construction phase. It will be a modern, ecological and environmentally friendly project that will mark a new era for Greece as we all envisioned it," the prime minister continued, adding that it could take 10 years for the development to be completed.
The renovation of the airport has been delayed in details, and tied up in court cases, for nearly two decades, with critics of the project proclaiming environmental and heritage concerns as ancient cemeteries and prehistoric settlements have been found in the area. However, in 2018 the Supreme Court approved the project.
