The Filiki Eteria or the Society of Friends. as iwas otherwise known, was founded on September 14th, 1814 and played a crucial role in the uprising which led to the Greek War of Independence against the Ottoman Empire on March, 25th 1821.
In the beginning of the 19th century the notions that a new Greek state had to be established was ripe.
However, there were two camps, those who believed that the time for the Greek revolution was right and others who belived that it was too early.
In 1814, three Greeks of the diaspora came together in Odessa where a large Greek community lived. They formed a secret society with the purpose of initiating the Greek revolution to rid the country of the Ottomans. The three founders were Nikolaos Skoufas from Arta, Emmanuel Xanthos from Patmos. and Athanasios Tsakalof from Ioannina.
Soon after Panayiotis Anagnostopoulos joined the organisation. The Filiki Eteria was created mostly from Phanariotes Greeks from Russia, local cieftains and Serbs.
PLEASE DON'T FORGET THAT THE PARTHENON MARBLES MUST RETURN TO GREECE
