PHOTINI PAZARTZIS


        A GREEK WOMAN ELECTED TO HEAD THE HUMAN RIGHTS COMMITTEE





A Greek woman, Photini Pazartsis, Professor of Public International Law was elected as chairwoman of the influential  Human Rights Committee. She was elected unanimously by all the 198 participating members of the committee.


After her election, she said it was a great honour for her to serve as  Chairwoman for the next two years.  She is the first Greek woman to assume the leadership of the Committee,



The Human Rights Committee is the body of the independent members that monitors the implementation of the International  Covenant of Civil and Public Rights by its state parties.


All states are obliged to submit regular reports to the Committee on how the rights are being implemented.  The Committee examines each report and addresses its concern and recommendations to the State parties in a form of correlating observations.


Mrs Pazartzis is the Director of the Department of International Studies of the Athens Law School and  Director of the LL.M International and European Studies. She teaches undergraduates and graduates students in the areas of international settlement disputes, international covets and procedures, international human rights law and the law of the seas.


She has been a Visiting Fellow at the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law and at Wolfson College of the University of Cambridge (1998, 2017-2018) and has lectured at several universities and academic institutions,


She is also a member of the Editorial Board of the European Journal of International Law and a member of the Advisory Board of the Polish Year Book of International Law.  She is the author of numerous books and articles.




She is married to Spyridon Flogaitis, a lawyer, jurist and academic who is currently a professor of Public Law at the University of Athens,
