THOUGHTS AND MEMORIES

Severe riots are taking place in the UK and all over the world concerning the unfair murder of George Floyd.  The rioters are protesting against racism and police aggression, “to be coloured is not a crime,” they chanted.  It is very touching that so many people worldwide, are boiling with fury against violence, assault and racial discrimination.

Unfortunately, the coronavirus disease continues killing so many innocent human beings all over the world, an enormous tragedy.  In Greece, we are lucky because our government kept us indoors from the very beginning of the pandemic in order to prevent this awful sickness from spreading.  Apparently, we Greeks are, presently, an excellent example of strictly obeying rules except for several unfortunate exclusions.  So, most of us stay at home and do not meet with our beloved families, friends and neighbours which is newly felt grief. When we go out, we wear masks to protect ourselves and those who are most susceptible to this awful disease.

We sincerely hope that one day, we shall wake up from this horrible nightmare and everything will be normal once more.  No wars, no racial or religious discrimination, no greed no envy, no discontent.   Life is short so let's make the best of it.

My husband and I got married on the 8th June 1954, in Karachi, Pakistan and we literally lived happily ever after. We went on home leave, to Italy where we bought a Fiat 500, then we drove to the French and Italian Riviera and went home to Greece with a ferryboat.

We already knew that we were transferred to  Kenya so after our leave ended, we went to Mombassa where our great delight our son Spiros was born, on the 17th July 1957, a beautiful blond baby.  Then we were transferred to Uganda and I was pregnant once more. When we told that we were going to be transferred to Zanzibar, my husband, Aleco, very bravely said enough is enough and resigned from Ralli Bros.  So we returned to Greece and lived in Kifisia,  To our great delight our son Yiannis was born, on the 12th October 1958, a lovely ash-blond baby.

It was difficult in the beginning but as the years passed by, with hard and conscientious work we managed to do rather well and sent our sons to good schools and very good universities.  Spiros attended the Technical University in Munich and Yiannis went to the London School of Economics.
