GREAT HOPES AND EXPECTATIONS ABOUT A CORONAVIRUS VACCINE

Astra Zeneca Installations in China

According to the BBC, the pharmaceutical giant Astra Zeneca will start producing a vaccine against the coronavirus.  Trials for the drug have already begun, but the firm must, immediately, start producing doses so that it can suffice the demand if the vaccine is proved successful.

The executive manager of the drug company said: "We are starting to manufacture this vaccine right now as we have to have it ready the very moment we have the results."

Astra Zeneca said it would be able to supply 2 billion doses of the vaccine and that they wish to be as fast as possible.  Obviously, there is a financial risk if the vaccine is ineffective.  They also announced that they are ready to produce the vaccine from September 2020.

Scientists have warned that a coronavirus vaccine might not supply full immunity.  Despite these doubts, international research continuous with about 80 companies around the world working on possible successful vaccines.

Astra Zeneca indicated that the production could materialise in several countries. It thanked the UK and the USA governments for "substantial support to accelerate the development and production of the vaccine".  It also said it was negotiating with the Serum Institute of India and other pharmaceutical companies in order to boost the production and circulation of the drug.

Astra Zeneca's chief executive described the coronavirus pandemic as a "global tragedy"  and a "challenge for all humanity".  " We need to defeat the virus altogether because it will continue to inflict huge personal suffering and leave large and long-lasting scars in every country around the world. We are, also, so proud to be collaborating with Oxford University to turn their ground-breaking work into a medicine, that can be produced on a global scale."

It is extremely satisfying to see the tremendous efforts that are made internationally to combat this devastating disease. We wish to thank all the companies and researchers for their constant and vigorous efforts to find a vaccine that will save the human race.

(I wish to thank ERT, SKAI TV Gr., BBC, CNN and the Greek and international press for the valuable information, without which this post would not have been written.)
