HOW BRAVE GREEK SAILORS BURNT THE TURKISH FLEET

While praying silently to the Virgin Mary, during the Greek war of independence, Greeks from Hydra, Spestes and Psara sent their floating bomb against a Turkish frigate.

"The Burning of the Turkish Frigate" by Constandinos Volonakis

The bomb was an old, dilapidated ship filled with gunpowder that only waited for a spark to explode. These we the famous fireships of the Greek War of Independence.

We are very proud of these brave islanders who, while risking their lives, did their duty, during the Ottoman occupation of our country.
