The term “basket case” originated during World War I, in the
USA. The meaning was the tragic
situation of soldiers who had lost their limbs in battlefields, as they had to
be carried to hospitals or to army medical care centres, in baskets.
Today, it has a metaphorical meaning of a person in an
extremely difficult phycological and mental situation or a country, like Greece
used to be before entering the European Union, which is in an economic turmoil
and severe debt.
Language, the principal method of human communication is a
wonderful instrument of expressing not only our feelings, ideas and dreams but
also of pinpointing the happy, easy, difficult and tragic situations with which
we have to cope. These are birth, childhood, sickness, education, adulthood, marriage,
parenthood, middle and old ages, and death.
