PRINCE PHILIP DIES



Prince Philip, the Greek born royal who was the husband of Queen Elizabeth  II died today in London, aged 99.


"His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle," the Royal family announced. "Further announcements will be in due course."  The royal family join with people around the world to mourn this loss.


It is with deep sorrow her Majesty the Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness, Prince Philip the Duke of Edinburgh,  Prince Philip's death came 12 days before the Queen's 95th birthday on April the 21st.  There will be a period of national mourning.


Philip, whom the Queen referred to as "my strength" was hospitalized in February for infection and for a preexisting heart condition.  But recovered and returned to recuperate at Buckingham  Palace.


The Duke was born on the 10th of June 1921, on the Island of Corfu and was the youngest child and only son of Prince Andrew of Greece and Princess Alice of Battenberg.  


Philip's maternal grandfather, Prince Louis of Battenburg renounced his German titles, adopted the name Montbatten an Anglicised version of the name Battenburg, and became a British citizen. 


During the coronavirus pandemic, Philip and Elizabeth had been staying at Windsor castle. The Duke supported his wife throughout unprecedented times of social, economic, technological and political change and family crises.


Fourteen prime ministers held office while Philip was British Consort, from Winston Churchill, in 1952, through Boris Johnson.
