Greece has donated an exact replica of the charioteer of
Delphi, Heniokhos in Greek, to the city
of Doha in Qatar.
The statue was unveiled at the central metro station of
Doha’s international airport Qatar, during an official ceremony earlier this
week in the presence of the Greek Minister of Culture, Mrs Lina Mendoni.
Heniokhos is on of the most famous statues surviving from
ancient Greece and is considered one of the finest examples of ancient bronze
sculpture. The life-sized statue of the
charioteer was discovered in 1896 in the sanctuary of Apollo in Delphi and is
on display at the Delphi Archaeological Museum. It was also in 1896 that the first modern
Olympic Games lations that took place in Athens.
According to minister Mendoni, Greece offered the Heniokhos replica to the people of Qatar as a symbolic gesture aiming to strengthen relations between the two countries.
“Many centuries later, Heniokhos became the ambassador of
the friendship between Greece and Qatar” Mrs Mendoni said during the unveiling
ceremony in Doha. While in Qatar,
Mendoni also met with Khalid bin Ibrahim Al Sularti, General Manager of the Cultural
Village Katara and discussed the potential of establishing a common strategy to
promote Greek popular and modern art.
The Katara is a multidimensional environment of culture and
entertainment that hosts exhibitions, projections, concerts and theatre
performances. The cultural village also
features an open amphitheatre of 5000 seats.
The Greek Minister of Culture also visited new National
Museum, which will open its doors in a
few months, the Olympic Games Museum and the Museum of Islamic Art.
