Due to the unprecedented coronavirus disease and it
repercussions, I did not have the opportunity to write about a great judicial
personality, the new Presídent of the Greek Republic, Mrs Katerina
Sakellaropoulou.
Mrs Sakellaropoulou was born in Thessaloniki, she studied
law at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and completed her
postgraduate studies at public law at Paris II University. In the mid-1980s, she was admitted to the
council of State and she was promoted to Counsellor in 2000.
In October 2015, she was appointed vice-president of the Council of State and in October 2018 she became the first female president of the court, following a unanimous vote.

She has been a member of the Association of Judiciary Functionaries
of the Court of State. During her tenure
at the association, she has served as general secretary for one year, vice
president for two years and president from 1993-1995 and 2000-2001.
She publishes regularly in academic journals, she has
extensive experience in teaching, as well as being an educational and Foreign
Ministry consultant as an officer of the judges’ union.
The distinguished judge
has served as President of the Hellenic Society for Environmental
Law since 2015, and has actually worked on large cases involving the
environment, including the diversion of the Acheloos river in Thessaly
and the preservation of the historic refugee buildings on Alexandra’s Avenue in
Athens.
An author of several books, the famous jurist, besides Greek, speaks
English and French. Regarding her
personal life, she is divorced, a mother of a daughter and she lives in central
Athens.
When the Greek prime minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis nominated
her for the post of President of the Greek Republic he told the members of
parliament:
“…….I believe it is the time for our homeland to have a
worthy Greek woman as the head of state.
So, I propose for President of the Hellenic Republic the President of
the Council of State Mrs Katerina Sakellaropoulou.....She is known for her moderation, her sound judgement and her interest in protecting individual rights, which is her speciality.”
On the 22nd of January, 2020 she was elected with a landslide for
the post, with 261 Members of Parliament voting in favour in a 300-seat Parliament.
We are honoured and proud to have such a brilliant and thoughtful woman and such a keen environmentalist, as the head of our state. We wish her health, happiness and luck during this extremely difficult period for Greece and the whole world.
