GREEK STYLE OCTOPUS WITH ORZO



 

1 kilo octopus

4 allspice berries

2 bay leaves

Lemon rind of half a ;lemon

1 tbsp vinegar

6 tbsp olive oil

1 onion

1 clove garlic

1 vegetable cube

1 tsp fennel seeds

1 tsp sugar

500 g orzo pasta

1 tbsp tomato paste

1300 ml water


Place the octopus in a saucepan with the allspice berries, bay ,leaves, lemon peel, sugar, vegetable cube and water, Place over mediun heat and boil covered for 1 hour.  Drain and reserve the water,

Saute the onion and garlic in olive oil over medium heat and add fennel seeds and orzo and simmer for two minutes,  Pour in the water from the octupous, the tomato paste, the cube, sugar and water and boil for at least 15 minutes.  

Cut the octopus into small pieces and serve over the orzo with lemon zest, pepper and olive oil,

This is the first photograph of the magnificent ancient Greek statue of Moschophoros Calf Bearer when it was discovered on the Acropolis in 1864.

The statue dated 560 BC was 1.65 meters in height and is kept in the Acropolis Museum.

GREECE APPROVES PURCHASE OF ISRAELI MISSILES


 Greece approves the long-stalled purchase of IIsraeli-,made  Spike missiles.  The decision was taken during a meeting of the National Security Council chaired by the Prime Minster  of Greece, Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

During the meeting the country's armament program were discussed.

ELECTIONS IN GREECE TO BE HELD ON MAY 21ST


 

The Prime Minister of Greece, Kyriakos Mitsotakis officially announced that the parliamentary elections will take place on May 21st.

Speaking at a cabinet meeting in Athens Mitsotakis said that if the first round of voting is inconclusive and a government is not formed the second roound will take place in early July at the latest. 

Mitsotakis noted that the date marks the end of the government's four-year term.

Greek authorities said that two men of Pakistani origin have been arrested for planning an attact on a Jewish restaurant. The attack intended to cause loss of life and was linked with terrorism in Iran.

GREEK OCTOPUS AND ONION STEW STIFADO



 


Here is a Greek lenten recipe.

1 kg octopus, cleaned

2 tbsp vinegar

1 kg baby shallot onions, peeled

2 cloves garlic. minced

1/3 cup olive oil

1 glass of red wine

2 tbsp tomato paste

4 allspice berries  

2  bay leaves

Salt and pepper to taste.


Place the octopus in a saucepan with one cup of water and vinegar and let it boil for 20 minutes, remove the octopus from the saucepan and chop it into small pieces and place it in a bowl with one cup of broth. Carve the shallots croswise and peel them.

Saute the shallots  in olive oil for 10 minutes or  until tender, Turn the heat up and add the octopus and simmer until tender. Add the the tomato paste, grated onion, garlic and  saute for one minute more.

Pour in the wine, and one cup of hot broth, the bay leaves, allspice and season to taste,Bring to the boil  and simmer for 40 minutes until the octopus is tender and the sauce thickens.  Serve with crusty bread,

 The Greek War of Independence had many heroes. The first names that come to mind are Kolokotronis, Karaiskakis. Papaflessas, Bouboulina, Diakos among others.

The next thing that springs to mind are the heroic battles of Alamana,Valtetsi, Dervenakia and Navarino.

Yet the 1821 Greek War of Independence  had mzny unkown heroes who fought along with the legendary ones or fought in their own  battles for the liberation from the Ottomans.  

Some of them were honored by having streets after them or statues in their birthplaces!

GREEK INDEPENDENCE DAY MARKED WITH A STRIKING MILITARY PARADE IN ATHENS


 Greece cmmemorated the 202nd anniversary of the War of Independence, which would see the counntry after 400 years of Ottoman rule, with a grand military parade in Athens.

The parsde commenced at Vassilisis Amalia's Avenue and culminated at Omonia Square.Thousands of Greeks gathered to watch the parade.

                                             AROMATIC BLACK-EYED PEAS

250 gr black-eyed peas

1 small onion, peeled and chopped

1/2 yellow pepper. sliced

1/2 red pepper sliced

2-3 sprigs of purslane

1 tomatto cubed

1 cup cucumber, cubed 

1/2 cup cooked quinoa

Salad dressing:

4 tbsp olive oil

2 tbsp vinegar

Salt and pepper to taste

1/2 cup green olives pitted and chopped

2-3 tsp fresh herbs, basil, mint. parsley., oregano etc.


Cook black-eyed peas, drain and set aside to cool.Cook quinoa and chop vegetables.  Sprinkle with salad dressing and mix to combine and refrigerate,  Serve with warm crusty brown bread.

LORD BYRON THE ROMANTIC POET WHO DIED FOR GREECE



 




Lord Byron, one of the most famous phiellenes  actually participated in Greece's War of Independence eventually losing his life in Messologi on Aprll 19th 1824. 

Born in 1788 who had the title of Lord Byron became the leading figure in British Romanticism at the beginning of the 19th century. He lived a full life in every aspect and died young for the cause he was passionate about the liberation of Greece from the Ottoman Turks.

Young, handsome and aristocratic Byron lived exuberently and had innumerable romances and scandalous relationships although his acts of selfless heroism became part of a wider hisrory sample.

TURKISH FOREIGN MINISTER AFFIRMS NEIGHBORLY TIES ON GREEK INDEPENDENCE DAY


 Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavosoglu extended a letter of congratulations to his Greek conterpart Nikos Dendias on March 15th the anniversasry of the Greek Independence day.

25th MARCH IS THE NATIONAL DAY OF GREECE

PARTHENON FRAGMENTS RETURN TO ATHENS FROM VATICAN IN CEREMONY


 A renification ceremony took place in Athens to celebrate the return of three fragmments of the Parthenon to Greece from the collection of the Vatican Museums.  

The fragments were repatriated to Greece as a donation by Pope Francis to the Archbishop of  Orthodox Church of Athens and all Greece, His Beautitude Ieronymos II. 

The Parthenon fragments will now come under the care of the Acropolis Museum in Athens,

GREEK WAR OF INDEPENDENCE THE UNKNOWN HEROES



The Greek War of Independence had many heroes like Kolokotronis, Karaiskakis, Papaflessas,Bou boulina, Diakos and Kanaris among others.

Athens has been demanding the return of the Parthenon scuptures from where they were stolen from Greece  by Lord Elgin in the early 19th century.

The British Prime Minister said there are no plans to  change the law which blocks the Elgin Marbles from being returned to Greece.

I was born in British India, Mr Sunak's country of origin and I was happy when he became the Prime Minister of Britain and we Greeks are very disappointed that he took such an unfair dicesion because the Elgin Sculptures should return to Greece in the new Acropolis Museum where they belong.

DESPITE RHETORIC GREEK-TURKISH ARMED CONFLICT SEEM REMOTE



Even by the standards of Greek Turkish strained relations, it was a remarkable escalation.  Speaking to youths in a town in the Black Sea, president Erdogan directly threatened Greece.  "Unless the Greeks stay calm," he said, "Turkish troops could descend on Greece. sudddenly, one night."  

The striking rhetoric has lead to quesions about the relations behind it could be a a prelude to more alarming events. Turkey warned.

NATO officials believe that Erdogan's behaviour is bombastic due to the oncoming elections in Turkey where he seems to be rather unpopular with the Turkish people.

A group of specialists from Egypts Supreme Council of Antiquities have made a signficant discovery in uncovering a a zodiac sign that has never been seen before.

GREECE CONFORTS MYKONOS' MAFIA AFTER ARCHAELOGIST WAS BEATEN




The Greek government has vowed to take measures to halt intimidation and abuse directed to archaeologists working on Mykonos after one was beaten and another was sent threatening text messages. 

The intimidating behaviour at the archaeologist is believed to be in connection with illegal construction projects in Mykonos.

In response the Greek government has suspended building permits on the island.

 A timely  new book entitled "The Greek Revolution and Greek Diaspora in the United States" was recently released in Greece.
