FAINT HOPES OVER GREEK - TURKISH RELATIONS

Angela Merkel

During a telephone call between Chancellor Merkel and the Turkish president Erdogan, the latter claimed that Greece and Cyprus are to blame about the tension and instability in the eastern Mediterranean, which, of course, is a stark lie.

Erdogan also said that the support of Greece and Cyprus by the European Union is "unjust"!

As we already know, Turkey has sent an oil and gas exploration vessel, Oruc Reise, in Greek territorial waters, in the Aegean sea.  Erdogan now says that he wishes to have a dialogue with Greece in order to resolve common differences.  Greece agrees but only after Turkey removes the Oruc Reis from the Greek continental shelf, this being an absolute prerequisite.

Most Greeks, including me, are very sceptical about the Turkish true intentions. Do they really want peace or are they just trying to provoke us?  Fortunately, we have a forceful but prudent government that acts dynamically but also cautiously when aggravated by the Turks.
