GREECE 2020

In 2020 Greece, a country of 11 million residents, is greatly esteemed and became an example for its success of effectively fighting against the Covid-19 pandemic.  By all accounts, it has the respect and admiration of the remaining European Union nations and those of the entire world, with approximately only 150 deaths from the coronavirus, which records the lowest casualty rates in the European continent.

This feat is even more remarkable after considering the country's geographic vulnerability.  As Greece is a close neighbour with Italy and borders with Turkey, which are both hardly hit by this terrible disease, it could have had many casualties.  Also, as Greece is inundated by hoards of refugees, it is constantly exposed to coronavirus infections that could have devastated its population and destroyed its economy.

The Greek government acted quickly and decisively.  Schools, universities,  churches, cafes, restaurants,  hotels, libraries and museums were strictly closed.  Also, large gatherings were banned and substantial fines were imposed on individuals and businesses that did not comply with the rules.

The measures were applied even before the first coronavirus death was recorded, with the country installing a strict "Stay at Home " policy and imposing a comprehensive national lockdown.  Almost everyone has obeyed the government's measures.   Everyone in the country was confined to their homes and were required to notify the authorities each and every time they left their houses, even for walking the dog.

Furthermore, Greece closed its borders to all non-European Union nationals.  Also, all EU nationals that found themselves within the country's border had to stay in a 14-day quarantine.

Greece ceased all flights to and from the country, banned all tour travels with neighbouring countries and suspended sea routes.  No cruise ships or even private pleasure crafts were allowed to dock at Greek ports.

Medical experts agree that Greece's decision to promptly enforce social distancing measures and strengthen the health system helped curb the coronavirus pandemic.  This meant an immediate increase in intensive care beds by more than 70%  and hiring more than 3.000 additional hospital staff and doctors.

This was an extraordinary feat due to the lengthy erosion in the healthcare budget which exceeded 60%, during years of the Greek economic crisis.  It is, therefore, no surprise that Greece is considered an example of handling this biological devastation. The Greek government preferred to endure significant financial sacrifices rather than sacrifice human lives.  Also, Greece recognised that politicians should step aside and give priority to medical experts and epidemiologists.

We are very proud of our country!
