BORIS JOHNSON ADDRESSES THE NATION

Boris Johnson, the British prime minister addressed the nation late on Sunday night.  Please find a short summary below.

Mr Jonson urged the country to take its first tentative steps out of the lockdown, this week, in an address to the nation that was immediately condemned as being schismatic, confusing and vague.

Nicola Sturgeon, Scotland's first minister, said that Johnson's new "stay alert" message was so poor she did not know what it meant.  The Scottish and Welsh Governments and the Northern Ireland executive all responded to No 10 Downing  Street's message and they would persist with the current "stay at home" advice for citizens.

Johnson has been warned by trade unions that ordering many people back to work from as early as Monday is a "recipe for chaos" without taking prompt steps in order to protect the workers' health.

Doctors and the police reacted to the government's "stay alert" slogan and Boris Johnson's lockdown easing measures, with warnings of disobedience and the "impossibility of policing".   Unfortunately, the prime minister's address was all Greek for the residents of the United Kingdom.
