VIOLENCE IN SPORTS

                                                                         

              

As the dark side of sports-related violence with the murder of 19-year-old Alkis Cambanos in Thessaloniki, the police have launched a sweeping crackdown across the country with reports saying that it has compiled a list of 100 hooligans in Attica alone that it has its eye on.

 

They are hard-core fans of the capital’s largest teams have already been questioned and 150 have been arrested for sport’s violence. 12 people have been arrested for Alkis' tragic death and 2 more have escaped in Albania where they will be arrested by the Albanian police and returned to Greece  A road in Thessaloniki is named ALKIVIADIS KAMBANOS  in his honor. 

The police told the press that 30% of the perpetrators are minors which is very worrying.  Why and how do children become criminals? What is wrong with our society?  We must be next to our children showing them, through our examples, that, among others, they should show compassion and trust towards mankind. 

We were greatly impressed with Alkis' parents who in their profound grief, showed great magnanimity saying that they felt no hatred for their son's assassins but only sorrow because they were not loved as children.  How chivalrous can this tragic couple be?
