TENSIONS BETWEEN UKRAINE AND RUSSIA (Continued)

I have to write about this issue once again as it is the first topic internationally

Tensions between Ukraine and Russia are at their highest in years between Ukraine and Russia, with Russian troops accumulating along the two countries’ borders, spurring fears that Moscow could launch an invasion.

Ukraine has been warned that Russia is trying to destabilize the country ahead of any military invasion.  Western powers have repeatedly warned Russia against aggressive moves against Ukraine.  The Kremlin denies it is planning to attack and argues that NATO supports Ukraine including weapon supplies and military training, constitutes a threat on Russia’s western flank.  The picture is complicated but. apparently, there is a breakthrough.

The US and NATO have described the movements and concentration of troops as “unusual”.  As many as 100.000 Russian troops have remained amassed at the Ukrainian border, despite the warning from President Biden and European leaders of serious consequences should Putin move on with an invasion.  Russia’s Defence Minister earlier said that troops in regions of Ukraine were returning to their bases after completing military drills a step that was received with caution in Europe.

NATO’s General Secretary, Jen Stoltenberg said there would have to be substantial withdrawals of troops and equipment to remove the threat of an invasion, echoing an earlier comment from the UK Minister of Foreign Affairs. Liz Truss. But he said there was the reason for “cautious optimism” as Russia appeared willing to engage with diplomatic efforts.
