IS GREECE THE SUMMER CAPITAL OF THE WORLD?

There was an outstanding rise in the number of tourists visiting Greece by 30 million in 2018-2019, three times our country's population,  Greece is becoming the undeniable summer capital of the world, according to the international and local press and the blog Greek Reporter.  It is also a safe destination as it has the least coronavirus cases in the European Union.

Its beauty, culture,  famous archaeological sites and the philoxenia (hospitality) of the residents have made Greece a first-class destination for the most demanding of travellers.  It is among the three European countries with the most sunshine per year and per day and the weather can be beautiful and periodically warm even during the winter months.

Since the 1950s, a few years after World War II ended, Greece has been internationally recognised as a popular holiday resort.  Spread among 2.500 islands, it has the largest coastline in the Mediterranean, according to the CIA World Factbook.

The Pythagoreion in Samos

Being the country of origin of democracy, philosophy and the Olympic games Greece has made very significant cultural donations to the world.  From the Parthenon in Athens to the Pythagoreion in Samos Greece is proud of its 18 UNESCO World Heritage sites, among the most numerous in the world.  Another 14 landmarks of unique culture and natural beauty, across the country, are currently placed on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

It is a country that loves and highly appreciates art, and we continue to actively enjoy it, especially during the summer, when one can watch and appreciate ancient drama, modern performances and music recitals at numerous festivals all over the country, the most prestigious being the Athens and Epidaurus Festivals.

Tourists can also watch folk festivals and traditional dancing, especially on the islands during the summer months.   Also, they can visit the Greek museums to admire the ancient and more recent exhibits, but talks and educational activities are, also, offered by the museums on subjects such as archaeology, natural history, modern art and science.
