Anyone who has seen the British television series The Durrells of Corfu is aware the family of Lawrence Durrell spent four idylic years on the Greek island.

Although the series is more a comedy than a drama the family's circustances were quite dire, left without a husband and a father for four children Durrell's mother Louisa was left without any ,means to look after her family
