"Pride and Prejudice" is an 1813 novel written by Jane Austin. This novel follows the character development of Elizabeth Bennet, the dynamic protagonist of the book that teaches one about the percussion of hasty judgment and comes to appreciate the difference between superficial goodness and actual goodness.
Mr Bennet, owner of the neighborhood estate of Longbone estate in Hertfordshire has five daughters, but his property can only go to a son, His wife also lacked an inheritance, and due to the antiquated British laws, which fortunately have changed since then. His family faces poverty upon his death. Thus it is important that one of the girls marry well. So this is the motivation that drives the plot.
"Pride and Prejudice" has constantly appeared at the top of the list of the "most loved books" among literary scholars and the reading public. It has become one of the novels in English literature with over 20 million copies sold and has inspired many derivatives in modern literature.
Plot summary:
In rural England, in the early 19th century, Mrs. Bennet attempts to persuade her husband to visit Mr. Bingly, a rich bachelor who recently arrived in the neighborhood. After some verbal sparring with her husband, Mrs Bennet believes he will not visit Mr Bingly. Shortly afterward, he visits Netherfield Mr. Bingley's recently rented residence, much to Mrs, Bennet's delight. This visit is followed by a ball at the local assembly rooms that the entire neighborhood attended.
At the ball, the Bennets are introduced to the whole Wethersfield which is Mr. Bingly and his two sisters, the husband of one of his sisters, and Mr. Darcy his best friend. Mr.Bngly's friendly and cheerful manners make him very popular. He appears to be attracted to June Bennet with whom he dances twice.
Mr Darcy is reported to be as twice as wealthy as his friend, is haughty and aloof so he is very unpopular. He declines to dance with Elisabeth the second-eldest Bennet daughter saying that she is not attractive enough to tempt him. Elizabetbfins his amusing and jokes about it with her friends.
Mr Bingley's sisters, Caroline and Louise later invite Jane to Netherfield for dinner. On her way there Jane is caught in a rainstorm and develops a bad cold forcing her to stay at Netherfield to recuperate much to Mts. Bennet's delight. When Elizabeth goes to see June Mr Darcy finds himself attracted to Elizabeth, stating that she has "fine eyes" while Miss Bingly grows jealous, as she herself has designs on Mr Darcy. Elizabeth is indifferent and unaware of his developing interest in her.
Mr Collins, Mr Bennet's cousin an heir to the Longbourn estate visits the Bennet family. He is a pompous clergyman who intends to marry one of the Bennet girls. After learning that June may soon be engaged he quickly decides on Elizabeth, the next daughter in both age and beauty.
Elizabeth and her family meet the dashing and charming army officer, George Wickham, who singles out with Elizabeth. He says he is connected with the Darcy family and claims Mr Darcy deprived him of "his living" a permanent position as a clergyman promised to him by Mr Darcy's late father. Elizabeth's dislike for Mr Dacy is confirmed.
At a subsequent ball at Netherfield, Mr Darcy asks Elizabeth to dance with him and despite her vow, she accepts. However, Elizabeth's mother and the younger Bennet sisters expose their family to ridicule by their silliness.
Charlott is grateful for the proposal and agrees to have a comfortable home and a secure future. Elizabeth is aghast with such pragmatism in matters of love. Shortly afterward the Binglys leave for London with no plans to return. and it appears Mr Darcy's wealthy aunt expects Mr Dsarcy to marry her daughter as planned in his childhood. which he refuses because he loves Elizabeth and wants to marry her,
