WILDFIRES BLAZE IN ATHENS OUTSKIRTS AS GREECE BATTLES WITH THE WORST HEAT WAVE IN 30 YEARS

Thousands of residents fled from their homes in the northern suburbs of Athens, burning houses, serving electricity supplies, and sending clouds of thick smoke in the air as Greece tried to cope with the worst heatwave in 30 years.

The Fire Brigade of Greece with volunteers worked hard to contain the flames (two men were injured) and the government sends airplanes to drop tons of water on the flaming northern suburbs.   Temperatures soared to 45 C (153 F), recording the hottest day on record for 2021. The same conditions are happening all over Greece.

Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis said this week on state television that we are "facing the worst heatwave since 1987." Then, unfortunately, more than 1000 people died.  Fortunately, in 2021 we have no casualties, but many people had to be hospitalized.

George Patoulis, the Regional Governor of greater Attica described the fire as"enormous" and said that the heat had dried out the landscape.  "It will take a lot of work to this under control," he said yesterday at the state television, ERT.
