FIRES IN ATTICA

  

 

                                          

 

Two terrible fires broke out in Keratea and Villia in Attika.  Despite the constant efforts of the fire-fighting Canadair planes and helicopters that are throwing tons of seawater on the flames, the fires are being accelerated by very strong winds and are burning dry grass and trees and the nearby dense forest of Sounion is in danger.   There is, also, clear evidence of arson.

 

People had to leave their homes from the area to save their lives.  Their houses have been spared for the time being.   Unfortunately, the planes stopped flying at dusk so only the fire brigade and volunteers will be fighting the flames all night.   Fortunately, the winds have dropped but it will still be a nightmare.

 

There is a double site of fire on Mount Pateras which the firefighters and the volunteers are desperately trying to put out.

The flames that extended in a large front are directed south geographically towards Megara burning virgin pine forest while it is reminded that six settlements have been evacuated, Paleochori. Agios Georgios, Kryo Pigadi, Mikro and Mega.

Some of the men of the fire brigade drove from northern Greece to help their colleagues in Attica and worked next to them for more than 24 hours against the fires that naturally left them exhausted.  

 

I wish to express my profound admiration and gratitude to the Greek pilots and the men of the fire brigade who risk their lives while doing their duty.
