On this date in 2004, the Athens Olympic Games held a
historic opening ceremony celebration.
Athens had been chosen to host the XXVII Olympiad in
Lausanne, Switzerland in 1997 by the International Olympic Committee. The 2004
Olympic Games marked the return of the Olympics in Athens, where it as born so
many centuries ago.
The ceremony was praised by the international press and
promoted technologies that had never been used before in any stadium or opening
ceremony. A giant pool was shown with an
iridescent fiberglass floor that drained its water in 3 minutes. The ceremony featured an artistic section
that showed the history of Greece to the world. It illustrated the culture of
both ancient and modern Greece, combining them in a two-part drama that showed
the resonance of ancient ideas on Greece’s remarkable presence.
The two sections were called “Allergy” and Clepshydra”
meaning “hourglass”. According to the
Greek press “The Allergy section features a poem by Nobel prise winning Greek
poet Giorgos Seferis, called “Mythistorema 3”.
It was a serial performance that featured centuries of
Cycladic Art and Archaic period of architecture
