Professor Kazazis, the head of the Centre of Greek Language
at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, has committed suicide by hanging at
the age of 74, for unknown reasons.
He was discovered dead in an office in Kalamaria and the
police have ruled out any foul play in the circumstances of his death.
He was a prestigious academic, whose career spanned across
some of the USA's most elite institutions.
He initially studied Classical Philology in Thessaloniki and then went
to study the same topic at the University of Illinois and Yale University in
America.
He was also a Fellow of the Harvard Centre of Hellenic Studies
and a University Professor at Maryland University. He studied and wrote at length about the
ancient Greek historian Herodotus, the intellectual and public speaker
Demosthenes and the Epic Circle, which refers to non-Homeric ancient Greek
poems that tell the story of the Trojan War, amongst other subjects. Kazazis also served a tenure as the President for private and secondary education.
He also studied the legacy of Greece, from the Renaissance
into the contemporary era of the Western world as well as Russia, and was made an
honourary Professor and Doctor of the State University, in Krasnodar, Russia.
Kazzazi’s death comes as a shocking tragedy to the academic
community of Greece because he was highly respected by his colleagues, and by all Greeks who admired and respected him.
