Victoria Hislop recently visited the archaeological excavation
sites of the Lasithi Plateau, an area of great historic significance on the
eastern part of Crete.
Excavations have resumed after 100 years under the
supervision of the Ministry of Culture with funds provided by the Municipality
of the Lasithi Plateau.
During her visit Hislop said she was impressed by the area,
with its archaeological sites dating back to the Minoan Civilization, as well
as its history, traditions and natural beauty.
The British author also thanked the Mayor of Lasithi
Plateau, Yiannis Stefanakis, for the warm welcome and hospitality.
Hislop visits Greece frequently and has a second home in
Crete. In 2020, she was officially
awarded the Greek citizenship for her contribution to Greece’s history and
traditions through her books. She has
also contributed to the of Crete as a tourist destination through her books and
activities.
“The Island”, one of her many bestselling novels, is
set in Spinalonga, an island off the
coast of Crete, that was Greece’s leper colony for much of the 20th
century.
The book was adapted by Greece’s Mega Channel as a
26-episode series called “To Nisi”, which premiered on Greek television and was
considered a huge success among viewers and TV critics.
