THE ELEVATION OF THE HOLY CROSS
The Elevation of the Holy Cross is one of the great feasts
of the Orthodox Church, celebrated on the 14th September and it is a
day of strict fasting.
According to ancient teachings, Saint Helen, the mother of Emperor Constantine the Great, discovered the
Holy Cross on the 14th September, 325 AD in the vicinity of Golgotha
where it lay buried in the dust for centuries.
On the spot where the Cross was found, an unknown flower of great beauty and aroma was also
discovered, which was named Vasilico, meaning the flower of royalty, dedicated to Saint Helen, who led the
expedition.
For the next three hundred years, the Holy Cross stayed in
possession of the Christians of Jerusalem, but the city was captured by the
Persians in 614 and the Cross fell into their hands. Fortunately, it was later recovered by the forces
of the Byzantine Empire.
