FAMOUS MODERN GREEK PAINTERS

                                                   PANAGIOTIS TETSIS





PANAYIOTIS TETSIS was a Greek painter, born in Hydra in 1925.   He was an expert on the post-impressionist tradition.  He spent his childhood and early childhood years in Hydra and moved to Piraeus in 1937.  Then he depicts marine themes that are familiar to him mostly set against the background of Hydra and Sifnos.  He died in 2016.   

 

 

                                                 STEPHEN ANTONAKOS






Distinguished for using vibrant colours, Stephen Antonakos was a pioneer in introducing neon lights. Around 1969, he called neon a "controlled paradise" 


                                    

                                          CHRYSSA VARDEA-MAKROMICHALI

 


was born in 1939 in Athens and studied at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere in Paris and the California School of Fine Arts in San Fransisco,  She organized her first solo exhibition there and in the same year, she exhibited at the Guggenheim Museum.  Her work was soon recognized by the American art world as a fresh artistic approach that succeeded abstract expressionism.  She also sculpted using aluminum, steel, plexiglass, and neon.  She died on December 25th, 2013.



                                               NIKOS HADZIKYRIAKOS-GHIKAS

 







He was born in Athens in 1906 and he took his first painting lesson in Athens under Konstantinos Parthenis, (1921-1929).  He studied French and Greek literature in Paris and at the same time he also enrolled at the Ranson Academy and the engraving studio of Dimitris Galanis.  He began to exhibit in Paris in 1923.  In 1927, he had his first solo show in Paris at the Preciez Gallery and the following year at the Stratigopoulos Gallery in Athens.  In 1937, he started his involvement with stage design and designed costumes and sets for the Marika Kotopouli theatre, the Modern Greek Ballet of Rallou Manou, the Matei School and Convent Garden in London in 1961,  He was also elected Professor at the School of Architecture of National Technical University where he taught drawing.            



                                                 CHRISTOS KARAS

 



 


Christos Karas was born at Trikala in Thessaly on the 9th December 1930.  After short studies at the Panteion University, he enrolled at the School of Fine Arts in Athens, and with his certificate, he received a scholarship for the School of Fine Arts in Paris,  where he stayed for 3 years.  He visited many European countries to watch the large international exhibitions.  


When he returned to Greece, he participated to create a contemporary artist climate with many exhibitions, TV shows, and press conferences, and with other artists, he created a conjunction called TOME.


In 1994, he represented Greece at the Venice Biennale.  In 2001, the Academy of Athens gave him a prize for his work.
