HOLY SATURDAY

Christos Anesti

Holy Saturday is the last day of lent,  a day of great expectations for Sunday, A day full of nostalgia and happiness for the resurrection of Jesus.  On the morning of Holy Saturday, the Greek Orthodox Church commemorates the resurrection of our Lord which is expected with great happiness by the devout.

The Resurrection  Mass takes place a few minutes before midnight, all lights are turned off and the priests come out of the holy altar holding candles lit by the Holy Ligh, which is distributed to the congregation.  Exactly at midnight, the priest exits from the church and announces the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Fireworks go off and the night is filled with colourful explosions.

Then, most people return home and form a cross on their doorsill with candle smoke and all together they crack each other's eggs and enjoy magheritsa, a delicious Greek Easter soup.   CHRISTOS ANESTI!!
