The Nemean lion was a vicious monster, that lived in Nemea,
according to Greek mythology.
It could not be killed by mortal weapons because its hide
was impenetrable to attacks. Its claws
were sharper than swords and could go through any armor.
The first of Herakles’ 12 labors was slaying the lion of
Nemea after the order of King Eurystheus, his cousin.
According to another version, the Nemean lion took women as
hostages, luring warriors from nearby towns to save a damsel in distress. After entering the cave, the warrior would
see the woman feigning injury and would rush to her side. Once he was close, the woman would turn into
a lion and would kill the warrior, devour his remains, giving his bones to
Hades.
Herakles went to the area until he came to the town Cleone
where he met with a boy who said that if Herakles slew the lion and returned alive
in 30 days the town would sacrifice a lion to Zeus, but if he did not return in
30 days, the boy would sacrifice himself to Zeus.
While searching for the lion, Herakles brought some arrows
to use against it, not knowing that his hide was impenetrable when he found the
lion he shot it with an arrow and realized the circumstances.
After some time, Herakles made the lion return to the cave
which had 2 entrances, one of which Herakles blocked and he entered through the
other.
Herakles stunned the beast with his club and using his
immense strength he strangled it to death.
He tried to skin the lion but it was impossible because its hide was impenetrable. Finally, goddess Athena told him to use one of the lion’s claws to skin the pelt. When returned on the 30th day carrying the carcass of the lion King Eurystheus was amazed and terrified and sent Herakles on his 2nd labor slaying the Lernaean Ornithes.
