TRUMP OR BIDEN?

                                                       Trump or Biden?

On the 3rd November 2020, the American citizens decided who they prefer as a president.

Republican Trump was challenged by Democrat Biden, who was Barack Obama’s vice-president and has been in the US politics the 1970s.

                                                  The College Electoral System

The national polls show that Biden is the popular candidate but that does not predict the result of the elections. This is because the US system is not based on the majority of votes but on the College Electoral System.  How does this system work?

The number of electors of each state is roughly in line with the size of its population.  Each state gets as many electors as it has lawmakers, the US Congress, representing both lawmakers and senators.

California has the most electors 55, while sparsely populated states like Wyoming, Alaska, N. Dakota and Washington DC have only 3.   There are 538 electors in total and each represents one electoral vote and each candidate needs to get the majority of the votes, 270 or more to win the presidency.

Joe Biden in a recent poll had 52%, while Trump had only 44%.  By contrast in the 2016 elections were far less clear and unjust, because although Hillary Clinton had 3 million more votes than Trump, he became president because of the College Electoral System.

Never before has America gone through such crucial and dramatic elections. Unfortunately, it is a divided and coronavirus struck country.

The Guardian wrote on the Trump – Biden debate, which was terrible:

“The rest of the world and future historians will weep” the newspaper wrote, adding that Biden was the man who looked presidential, saying that if Trump was re-elected  “this dark, horrifying, unwatchable fever dream will surely be the first time of America's obituary.”

The Financial Times highlighted how the president stoked lies about voter fraud and urged his followers to carefully watch polling stations.   “Dog whistling is the politico speech for such language but it implies that Trump was blatant,” it wrote.

The newspaper also noted that snap polls, after the event, said that Mr Biden, fortunately, had come out on top.  “But no one with care for the American Democracy can have switched off feeling anything but queasy.” (Due to Trump).

There has never before been such a difficult situation in American politics.  The votes are counted one by one in order to determine how many and which states are won by each candidate.  We must wait to see who will be the new president of the United States. a real thriller.   I sincerely hope it will be Joe Biden.
